The new Linux User Group of Mauritius website has been launched. Visit it at:
Interestingly, we have chosen to use WordPress to power the website instead of a CMS like Drupal. The reason for this is that we have a hidden agenda (not so hidden anymore now…): we want people to interact as much as possible. We want YOU to leave a ton of comments (except if you are a bloody spammer…) We would like that all those who use Linux and Open Source Software in Mauritius (whether you do that at work and/or at home) become aware of that website and use it to communicate. So, please, share the URL with all your friends (including those who have been brainwashed by the guys from Redmond. Who knows what might happen?)
Additionally, if you want to contribute an article to the website, you are very much welcome to do so. Send it to our editorial board (at avinash AT noulakaz DOT net for the time being…) and we’ll do the necessary.
Thanks. Linux rules!

hi .. I am a great admirer .. but i get a feeling that LUGM is a bit like the G8 or the G20 .. people who know a lot talk to people who know a lot leaving people who know a little wandering .. what can they be talking about ?? .. LTGM = Linux Teaching Group …… would be perhaps better …. or perhaps we r left to pay for that ??? ( guess u r understanding me ) .. i still very much apreciate what u do !!

Interesting point of view…
It’s true that some of us are old-timers and we have a good grasp of Linux. This does not mean we can’t explain things to newbies though :-) Maybe we’ll have to organise our next event with this in mind.

Hi,
That’s a good point. While the group itself has many Linux/Unix enthusiasts who are well-versed, there are ‘some’ members who are ‘newbies’ in this fantastic world. Having something more for such people will be of course most welcomed. Something not that technical, or not technical at all.
Some examples:
Into the intro level:
– installing the easiest distro
– configuring internet connectivity for most widely used modems
– changing desktop themes, sound
– package management system
Onto mid-level:
– some scripting with bash
– rights management for files
– from single-user to multi-user system
etc
Well, that’s it that I may imagine of. (I guess you’ve noticed my level :P)
But that’s what most users would probably want.

i really think “leaving a ton of comments” is not a good argument for using wordpress and not drupal. Drupal is much more powerful….yet extremely complex. but once you understand their lingo (and i know u do sir), u can do much more with it…blogs, forums, and any other sites.
avinash says
I agree. Drupal is powerful. I use it to power http://www.knowledge7.com for instance.
We are using WordPress for the LUGM website because, after discussion, we found out that a blog format would be good enough for it… for the time being at least.

Hi everyone…sorry i know this is not the place. Been having hell of a time with myt mail….Using microsoft outlook 2007 or even outlook express and can’t send any mail since monday…have phone myt support tons of time but they say that their servers are fine…here’s the situation:
1.Internet conneciton working fine
2. Able to send and receive mail via the web portal on myt sire without any problem.
3. But using outlook 2k7 or express mail cannot be sent
Here’s what i’ve tried:
1. Restarting the computer ——–same problem
2. Using another mail program ———same problem
3. Telnet port 110 on mail.myt.mu ——responded ok
4. Telnet port 25 on mail.myt.mu ——– responded : connection lost
5. But if livebox is switch off and back on again mail are sent correctly only once then i start to get the same error again (error:476 connection from your host are denied)
so if anyone is having the same problem let me know plzzzz………..
avinash says
As far as I remember, error 476 originates from your ISP (i.e. MT.) So ask them why you are getting this error.
