David Channe Vy has sent me his results for today (what about the others?) and together with mine, I can make the following preliminary observations:
- I’m getting 72% of what I am paying for on my MyT 256
- David is getting 39% of what he is paying for on his ADSL 512
Note: I’ve decided to ignore the results for the 1k and 10k files both from the US and Europe. They are too small and the latency and connection time is big relative to the transfer time and therefore bandwidth calculation cannot be made.
As from now, only do 4 tests at a go (100k from the US and Europe and 1000k from the US and Europe). Do this 3 times per day (at around 8:30, 16:30 and 22:30). Thanks.
Second day update
- I’m getting 68% of what I am paying for on my MyT 256
- David is getting 29% of what he is paying for on his ADSL 512
I pity David who got an average of only 150kbit/s today from his 512kbit/s ADSL connection…
Third day update
My internet connection is as slow as molasses tonight. I’ve collated all the data and things are looking interesting. Simply said, we are getting much less than what we are paying for. I’ll give you hard figures tomorrow.

(Dual sets of data to test which is faster. Only for one day)
(IP xx.xx.106.xx is definitely faster)

Hi Inf,
Can you please send me your report (as from now) by email? Sometimes I forget about checking comments…
Thanks.

Cam we contact EFF?
http://www.eff.org/press/archives/2007/11/28
I mean we are not getting what we are paying for. We need to get the surveys to a credible organisation.
We need to form a group, an open group, affiliated with EFF. United We Fight, United We Win.
avinash says
Thanks for this great idea.
ames says
You’re welcome but I’ve a feeling that you already knew about EFF.
I also suggest that group (if you intend to create and lead it) will have to be affiliated with NNSQUAD (nnsquad.org) in order to deal with Facebook-ICTA like issues.
Hey Avinash (can I call you Avinash or do I call you Sir? I’ll call you Sir)..huh…Hey Sir, is it worth to go for MyT or should I go for ADSL 512KBps, from your pov? I merely update my OSs, watch streaming channels on Miro, download ISOs of Gentoo, Fedora and Damn Small Linux off FTP when new ones are available and do basic surfing. I’m just scared that I won’t be able to watch HD streams off Miro with MyT once the limit has been exceeded.
Anyway, have a good day.

The idea of Avinash of forming a pressure group is most welcomed……
Very nice idea …

Hi avinash..well i have a small question to solve a big problem…have you ever heard of deploy.akamaitechnologies.com which is taking almost all bandwidth??? try type netstat -a in command prompt and see if you got same problem. i wanna block this deploy.akamaitechnoloies.com from my myT livebox itself, how can i do it?
avinash says
Akamai is a content delivery network and has servers in Mauritius. So you should be happy if a lot of your data is coming from Akamai. This means that you are browsing websites who are currently mirrored on the Akamai network and, consequently, the data is being transferred from Port Louis (instead of it being from the USA or Europe…) and, because MyT allows up to 2Mbit/s locally, your browsing experience should be much better.
So there is no real ground to complain.

Hi there,
do you guys have an idea what the proxy server details are of orange ?
Best regards,
Dietmar
avinash says
Hi Dietmar, I believe MT uses Squid in transparent mode. Why do you need the details you’re asking for? Maybe there’s a more straightforward solution…
king says
hi avinash, is there a way to reduce latency for online games?
avinash says
Yes. Connect to a server near Mauritius. The foreign countries closer to us being Portugal, France and, on the other side, Malaysia… Do some tests using ping.
