“A toute chose, malheur est bon…”
While my MacBook is being repaired, I have decided to use my Gmail account temporarily to read and write emails. My initial intention was to forward all my email (from avinash AT noulakaz DOT net and avinash AT uom DOT ac DOT mu) there.
But then I discovered this screen…
… and I realised that I could use Gmail like a normal desktop email client. If you look closely, you’ll see that I can send emails from all the addresses I commonly use (notice the “reply from the same address the message was sent to” option – this is a killer feature!) and you’ll also see that I can fetch emails from my two usual POP3 accounts directly from Gmail.
In simpler terms, Gmail is now perfect! Bye bye desktop email clients… Now, if only I could import my old mails to Gmail! Maybe I’ll have to setup a POP3 server and ask Gmail to fetch all emails from it. Any idea?

but i tried the retrieve mail feature, seems it doesnt work with yahoo mail :(
gmail is simply great :D
btw, i will soon be running out of space on gmail, it says:
You are currently using 2013 MB (71%) of your 2829 MB.
:P

Indeed, GMail is great. It has the POP3 feature at no cost – Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail charge for this.
It’s also got the killer point you mentionned: ‘reply from same address’.
And it is nearing 3 GB! Great!! That’s what’s called ‘you’ll nevaer have to delete a mail again’.

Very interesting, but it is hard to beat the convenience of using Mail.app (for example, for e-mailing pictures directly from iPhoto).
Does GMail support IMAP? This is a deal-breaker for me.

The more I’m using Gmail the more I like it.
One decision I’ve made while my MacBook is being repaired is to stop bringing it to work everyday… This obviously implies that I need to have my emails (and also some of my files) online.
I suppose you have seen that Gmail only offers POP3 access to email Eddy. This is perfectly understandable as Google wants to have the body of the emails to perfect their search and adsense algorithms :-)

I really couldn’t live without IMAP. Access emails from any connected devices that I own. All in sync. In a rich client.

I transferred all my company mails to google apps one month or so ago. I get the facility of managing my company domain within google apps excellent interface. I can create up to 100 users (the free version) and can delete accounts at will (the only limitation being that it won’t let you recreate an account with the same email address within 5 days).
With that I get a customizable signin page for all users in my company … It serves as an entry point for calendaring, blogs etc … ! Gmail is a killer app by a fantastic company … It won’t be bettered anywhere … Will probably be bettered by google as their product is evolving.

:) I’ve used desktop mail clients just for testing .. i have always been using web based mail clients.. its much more space saving.. and much more secure than mail clients which i will never have time to keep up to date with recent bugs.
Gmail’s been the best till now :p

So we all seem to agree: Gmail is the best web-based email system!

What is the POP server for accounts? Logically, its mx.uom.ac.mu right?
avinash says
No, it’s condor1.uom.ac.mu :-)
You can see that if you use nslookup and you type:
