I’ve finally decided to buy (in some weeks) an 14″ Apple iBook G4.
When I was 15, I discovered the NeXT computer and the NeXTstep operating system in the French computer magazine SVM and it was love at first sight. I still remember the feeling I had just looking at those gorgeous picture of the NeXT computer and the fantastic screenshots. And I said to myself: “I’ll buy a NeXT one day…”
Today, the NeXT is long dead but NeXTstep is thriving in Mac OS X, the operating system of Apple Macintosh computers.
And that’s why I’m buying an iBook. It’s well-featured, has a very nice design and, crucially, runs Mac OS X very well.
NeXTstep, nous voilà… after 17 years!

Why don’t you wait a little bit until the Intel based Macs become available in early 2006?

Hi Eddy,
(1) I’m not sure if the Intel-based Macs will be available in early 2006. Based on what I’ve read on Apple’s website and the noise in various forums (MacNN for example), the new Macs will be out around June 2006 and it’s only by the end of 2007 that the entire line will be replaced.
(2) I strongly believe that Apple will start with their flagship Powerbooks first and only release an Intel-based iBook (I can only afford an iBook :-)) months afterwards.
So, waiting a whole year is not a nice thought for me. Especially that my desktop computer is giving me some problems and I really don’t want to invest anymore in it.
The main reason I want a Mac is not because of the Mac hardware (and even less so because of the processor) but because of the user interface and Mac OS X (and I need a laptop because I work both at home and (obviously) at work)
What do you think?

I would personally get the 12″ ibook. Both models only have a screen resolution of 1024×768. I would prefer having a slightly slower machine which is more portable.
An intel based powerbook would be awesome. I can’t wait to see what apple comes up with when they release their next crop of notebooks. The current models are starting to show their age. No widescreen for the ibooks. The 12″ powerbook only does 1024×768. No lcd coating ala xblack.
Have you considered a Mac mini? You could still take it to work. It is also cheaper than the ibook.

The 12″ model does not have a DVD burner which I need because I do a lot of (amateur) video editing. I have looked at the Mac mini but I really want a laptop… :-)
Now, like you, I am dreaming a the next generation Macs but I don’t know if I can wait for 1 year… and, as I’ve mentionned, I would think that Powerbooks will get the Intel treatment before the iBook.
I have 1-2 weeks to decide. I guess I’ll have to spend some time reading AppleInsider now ;-)

Sorry for late reply, house purchase and no Internet connection oblige.
As Shane said, go with the iBook 12″ instead of the 14″. I hold the same reasoning. 3 years down the line, I’m still happy with mine. My next one will be after June 2006.
Don’t buy the PB, buy the iBook (with about the same H/W) and a cheap external DVD writer. Besides, it’s not like you will suddenly decide to burn a DVD while on the move :-)

I believe the 14″ ibook has the same resolution at the 12″ one. 1024×768. The 12″ ibook is the only deal from Apple. The rest is too much expensive compared to a Dell for example.
And don’t forget to add some RAM in that beast. 768MB will be adequate.

Good for you! Macs are great!
