I’ve just learnt that the 1Gb transfer limit for MyT has been waived. Instead, there is a new Garantie d’Usage which basically states:
Vous avez la priorité lorsque vous êtes dans votre “garantie d’usage”. Si vous dépassez votre “garantie d’usage”, vous pourrez continuer à  surfer, lire vos mails, mais avec un niveau de priorité moindre, pour preserver la qualité de service pour tous. Vous ne paierez rien de plus. Avec My.T, vous profitez du haut débit pleinement, sans soucis.
What I read from what is:
- Up to 1Gb of transfer per month, Mauritius Telecom will do its best (i.e. best-effort) to give us the bandwidth we’re paying for (i.e. 256 kbit/s in my case)
- If the transfer limit has been exceeded in the month, then Internet will become very slow (I wonder if they are using some kind of traffic shaping) but will still remain free.
Personally, that’s ok for me :-)
Eddy Young says
Check out http://myfrag.net. Users are reporting 2 mbps download speed. What is not clear is whether they are seeing this when downloading torrents from local peers or whether this happens with international downloads as well.
vicks says
un niveau de priorité moindre. :(
i download an average of 3.0 gb in 24 hours, i don’t think its ideal for me.
However MT recently tried to improve its services, offering packages like MyT,
But i wonder if its not a kind of strategy just to get lots of people to sign in a 1 year contract before MTML start providing its services!
Fred says
The question is… how slow?
Do you think it will revert to the old 128 kbps afer exceeding the limit, or slower still?
Yashvin says
it may become a bit slow, but let me tell u…
it cant become more slower than Nomad :S
it simply makes u mad…thats what their moto should be!
LaSh says
Yup, they’ve removed the ‘capping’ because they found and that most people who already were on ADSL were reluctant to move onto MyT because of the 1GB limit free transfer, which is quite understandable, imo.
I’m moving to MyT also now that the ‘capping’ is off :D I applied on Sunday, and am getting it tomorrow, which I think is quite a RAPID response coming from Mauritius Telecom.
Btw, I talked to the marketing guy who came over to my place for the initial talking, I asked him about this ‘garantie d’usage’ thingy.
It mostly applies to those who have switched from ADSL 128 to MyT 256
After using 1GB of data transfer, those having MyT 256 will move back to their initial 128 kb/s speed – no SO slow :P, whereas those moving from ADSL 512 to MyT 512, there won’t be any such thing, it’s gonna be 512 kbps all the way – and that’s for ME :D.
avinash says
To Eddy:
I confirm. I can download at around 800kbit/s from non-Mauritian websites since about 1 week. I’ve kept quiet because I thought it was a misconfiguration from MT for my connection :-)
To Fred:
I’ll tell you around 25 October when I exceed my 1Gb limit…
To Yashvin:
Many of my students are complaining about Nomad. Is it THAT crap?
avinash says
Can Asvin (or anyone else from MT) confirm that the “slow speed” will be the (perfectly respectable) 128Kbit/s?
Splash says
The 1 GB limit has been waived since 3-4 weeks now
as mentioned by lash many were reluctant to change!!!
after the limit waived MT call the normal adsl customers everyday for the move to MyT package!!!
The only problem is the 1 year contract term!
Will another ISP wont provide a better package in the meanwhile :D
About NOMAD thingy
just lol
many current users r discouraging their friends to even try it!!!
@ Yashvin :-
Y dont u relate ur stories online?
Like “How to use NOMAD in rainy[cloudy] days” :D
Still waiting NOMAD to cover the whole island since some years already!!
@ Avinash :-
This is not completely true!!!
Their techician are not ‘that qualified’!!!
A friend of mine was having connection problem with her LIVEBOX…
U know wat MT Tech said???
“Dont use firefox; use IE instead!!! to connect..” WHAT A JOKE!!!
If the pc de pc doesnt detect the LIVEBOX!!! do u use IE to solve it??? lol
The only thing the tech came to do was to “PING” the ip / change LIVEBOX and thats all
Since he cudnt get a solution he gave up!!!
COMPUTER SCIENTIST need to help MT TECHNICIAN!!! lol
Asvin Balloo says
Unfortunately Avinash, i’am also like you, I don’t know if the slow speed is 128Kbit/s ;-(
avinash says
Ok. We´ll find out at the end of the month what’s MT definition of slow speed :-)
Yashvin says
sorry for a late reply…
crap ??? more than that…
except the price, nothing is good…
ya, as splash says, during rainy cloudy days, thats worst…
well thats some months before n for now i cant say anything since it has not been raining in the north since long!
ya think that i will go and add more comments to my post itself concerning special precautions i took when using nomad!
see it there on http://yashvin.rikonplus.com/blog/
btw, just a summary…
put the nomad in a plastic bag n let it hand outside the window!
haha! seems mad? thats nomad!
Eddy Young says
Avinash: Many of the complaints about Nomad are unjustified if you ask me. For one, very few people ever call technical support to receive a free assessment of their connection. I did so when I subscribed to Nomad on behalf of a relative, and the technician was quick to sort out the problems. Secondly, anyone will be disillusioned if they expect a huge difference in speed when moving from dial-up to 128 kbps. The difference is minimal. Lastly, I think some have taken chances and subscribed to Nomad despite knowing that their areas are not covered by the network.
My wife uses Skype to talk to a relative everyday, and they experience very few problems. Once the connection was very bad, but it turned out that Nomad were upgrading the network (which they followed promptly by a phone call). I personally find it amazing that we can do video calls to Mauritius on such a narrow bandwidth. Having said that, I know another Nomad subscriber who experiences many problems with his connection.
Sundeep says
Nomad Nomad..
well, i must say, nomad is a good solution for guys who use the net for browsing, adsl (and now MyT) is too expensive..
Nomad offers low price for 24hrs connetivity, for some1 who like me had a 50hrs package with MT and on top of that with my excess, that was costly..
now with nomad 64, i have a somewhat faster bandwidth (compared to dial up), and am only for 24hrs(of course, there are some time when there are small complications) bt for the price you are paying, and the uptime of the service, i think nomad is not bad at all.
i have been on nomad for 10 months now, and following promotional prices due to uom network society membership, i will now take the 128kbps, and i will still b paying less than the current 64 connetion,
well i will tell u more abt the 128, right now, have to attend the lecture with mr avinash
Fred says
I have just been on the phone with one of the My.T telephone-support people. Although she didn’t seem quite knowledgeable, she kindly answered all my questions.
I can understand that after the 1 GB limit, MT does not guarantee a fluid 256 kbit/s connection; but she refused to acknowledge that there WILL be a drop in the connection speed and if ever there is, and by how much it’ll be.
I was meaning to ask those who have tried the Video on Demand service, does it or does it not consume the available bandwith and can one surf the net simultaneously?
avinash says
As far as I know, Fred, the VOD service does not prevent you from surfing at maximum speed (i.e. it has its dedicated bandwidth) at the same time.
BlueSteel says
I think that MyT is in favour af everyone coz u r paying 950+vat for a connection speed of 256 kbit/s whereas wiz the original wanadoo it would be for a 128 kbit/s.
As a hotliner on ADSL at O Telecom, i deduce zat its great. If u look at your LiveBox setup, u will see that u r receiving 5120 kbit/s and zat when u exceed your “garantie d’usage” ur connection speed return to its original state
pa grave! coz u r paying only 950+vat
However i found the technicien n the hotliners there as “Amateur”
which is totally false coz when the line is converted to DSL, the frequency is much higher n its far to mix up wiz a station signal.
avinash says
Personally, I also think my MyT is “good enough”
BTW, I don’t understand your last sentence BlueSteel (why use nicknames? Don’t you like your real name?)
:-)
Christopher says
Its me! Blusteel. U c am using my name now.:-)
.
I was saying that the technicians n hotliners were “Amateur” coz they don’t give concrete explanations of ur connection failures.
The only thing that could resolve a prob for them is to reset the livebox
Natasha says
Mauritius Telecom SUCKS!!!
ADSL is extremely expensive in Mauritius. Mauritius Telecom have the monopoly on SAFE cable. MT is making millions of profit each year and he is not willing to reduce the price of ADSL!
England ADSL 8Mb/s is 10Pound (Rs600)
France ADSL 20Mb/s is 9.90Euro (RS400)
India ADSL 2Mb/s is Rs700
Ireland ADSL 8Mb/s is 20Euro (Rs800)
Mauritius ADSL 1Mb/s is Rs6400 +vat
Please dont call our country ‘Cyber Island’ People wil laugh at us.
avinash says
True.
ADSL is extremely expensive in Mauritius. In my opinion, a good way to decrease this price is to have more local servers and mirrors. But this depends a good deal on MT’s policy.
Reaz says
In November 2005 and in budget 2006/2007, the government of Mauritius had reduced the price of SAFE by 20% and 25% respectively. It means that Adsl in Mauritius must have reduced by at least 45%. But up to now, the price is not reduced. Mauritius Telecom has broken record on profit this year.
By now Adsl 128kb must have been below Rs400. Who will finally brake the monopoly of MT?
That is why Im using Nomad. I found Nomad good but at time I do get broken connection. But I manage with my Nomad as the price is good.
Lets hope that MTML comes with good package of Adsl.
sailendrah says
Hi friends,
Never take My.T Package from Mauritius Telecom.
I have used my 1gb limit in 2 days. After that the connection is extremely slow. So slow that I cant open my web page! My livebox is not working from 5 days. I dont know if it is because that I have exceeded my 1gb. Up to now no technician from MT have come.
Yesterday, I have meet a relative working for MT. He had follow causes on ADSL TV in France. He told me that My.T will never work in Mauritius as the Safe cable is too weak! The flow of Broadband is too much saturated. That is why MT is buying Eassy cable.
It is useless to burn your money on My.T
Christopher says
I agree wiz wat ur saying, but see it in a diff angle. What do u prefer (ADSL or RTC).Even if u take Nomad, it will still pass through the SAFE.I’ve exceeded my 1gb but the connection is still goog.I’m downloading up to 31kbp/s and sometime i exceed th 69kbps/s
Technicians there are not so professionals. I think they are not so experienced on MyT`s Livebox (requirements & configurations)
Concerning the Safe Cable, i`ve made a test once and i deduced that the connection is a bit slower coz the time for the ping to reach the IP address 217.146.186.51 was 200ms more than it has to be for a perfect speed connection
However, sailendrah, during these past days there was a pb on safe cable coz 45Mb of it were damaged. Even at La Reunion they got slower connections or not at all.Thats why u were unable to open a web page.
vincent says
hi!I’m a Myt user(256kb)for one week now and if i’m right i already reached my 1Gb limit. However i’m experiencing a very annoying problem since last monday,my international download speed has dropped a lot, mostly during the day,but at night around midnight then it’s ok it downloads around 30kbp/s.With my previous 128kbps/s adsl i never got this kind of problem,id did dropped during the day but not that much. Now with the Myt the download rate during the day is a ridiculous 4-7kbp/s,that’s unbelievable!!!
I’ve made a report on the 8585 and they asked me to make a test by dowloading anything form a local website. When i do this, everything’s fine and the speed is over 180kbp/s and even more but my only problem comes when downloading from international websites during the day, even using download managers sucks(sorry for the word)but that’s how it can be explained.
They said they will send a technician to see the problem but i highly doubt that they will find a solution for that, what i think is that they know only how to install the livebox and other hardwares which come with it plus some simple basic configurations, that’s all!
So i want to ask you guy/s if there’s a special way of configurating the livebox????Any suggestion will be fine.
Vincent.
avinash says
I was downloading at 10Kb/s only.
I called them. They told me to switch off everything and wait for 15 minutes.
After this, my download speed was increased to 20-21 Kb/s which is acceptable for a 256Kbit/s connection…
vincent says
Yeah, but is it not annoying that everytime that your download speed drops you need to turn off your pc for even 15 minutes then turn it on again to get back that reasonable speed? Is there no other way, like changing the configuration of the livebox or may be re-adjusting some settings at the telecom(headquarters)there?I think you can’t keep turning your pc off and on like that.Did they send some technician(if there’s any who’s really qualified for that)to your place to see the problem closer?
With the problem that i’m facing i’m near turning into a bat because the only time i can get reasonable speed is after midnight, then i can seize the opportunity to download my files.Otherwise, like now it’s downloading at 8.5kbp/s and it’s killing me.
sailendrah says
Im very disappointed with the service of MyT.
Im going to cancel it!
I strongly advice you, my friends, NOT TO TAKE THE MyT.
Dev says
Hello guys!
Had the livebox installed last sunday, and upto now, its working fine and im managing to download at a speed of around 30KB/s which is more than acceptable for a 256kbps line (32KB/s max).
However, like Vincent pointed out, i get extremely slow download speeds during daytime – around 10KB/s. I have been experiencing similar problems with my adsl 128kbps line during the past weeks too. According to me, it has to do with MT’s “garantie d’usage”.
The hotliners told me that past 1 GB, my download rate would oscillate between 128 and 256kbps. However, what is think is that ADSL users, and i mean all ADSL users, are probably given lower priority during daytime (irrespective if they got past their download limit or not), so as not to sip out all the bandwidth, thus allowing non-DSL users, to surf at a reasonable speed.
At night, when the bandwidth is less sollicited, due to a decreased number of users, we get a higher priority which accounts for a higher download rate. Well, thats my theory. I have already reached and got well above 1 GB of downloads and if this stuff about garantie d’usage only works during daytime, im fine with it. Atleast, its better than having a constant but “slow” download rate of 13KB/s.
Now, on a different note, i would like to know if any of you guys been downloading on the torrent network. Personally, i get a NAT error and i suspect the livebox to be the cause. I disabled the integrated firewall and opened all my ports, but nada! If anyone could help out, i’d really appreciate.
My regards to Avinash, ur blog is really great man :D
Fred says
I just got hold of My.T. The connection is slow though, and Gmail doesn’t want to work. According to the technician, its due to the repairs being carried out by TELECOM PLUS on the network.
When the technician was setting up the Livebox, I briefly noticed a connection property in the admin page, it’s “Attenuation Rate”. I also overheard him telling some colleague about it being 44 at my place. Does anyone know about this attenuation rate and how good/bad 44 is?
Oh… does anyone know the admin password for the Livebox setup? ;)
Fred says
Sometimes you just forget about simplicity, the password is “admin”! ;)
vincent says
One question to all Myt users, does your livebox heat up like hell???Because mine does and i’m a bit worried about that and i want to know if it’s only me who’s getting this or is it normal?
And another thing, when you turn off your pc,do you let your livebox on or turn it off too?(except when you’re using the decoder which needs the livebox to remain on)
By the way,i would like to thank Avinash about his great blog, which we are all using to discuss about that Myt thing. We’re all thankful to you Man!Keep up the good work!!!
Vincent.
avinash says
Mine also heats up a lot!
Thanks for your appreciation for my blog :-)
Christopher says
ADSL means (Asymetric) digital subscriber line which also means that you will never get a same and constant speed rate each time you connect to the Net. As a hotliner (my work is based on internet/ADSL) at OMT (a futur competitor of Mauritius Telecom), i’ll will reply all your questions on the slow speed rate at daytime. (Your’r right Dev coz as there are many non-DSL user that are paying there internet consumption, MT will give them priority during day time in order to get the maximum profits on there heads. They know that ADSL users here are paying a fixed amount for unlimited internet connections which means that it will not provide them additional profit.)
However, the only way to get a same, stable connection speed is to have a SDSL connection.( which unfortunately i think is not applicable here in Mauritius-Maybe afterwards)
To fred now: Attenuations mease the weakness of your phone line.
I think that your attenuation is too high coz the limit is up to 45 here. This can result in lost of connection some time. You should tell them to clean up your DSL line.1 tips( unplug your phone and look at your attenuation)
By the way, as my friends said, this website is great Avinash coz we can help each oher through it.Thanks for it
Christopher
Christopher says
Good news my friend! I think MT has abolished the 1Gb of “garantie d’usage” for now.:-)
One of the hotliner there told me that we are no more restricted on 1Gb of full connection speed.
I hope that they were right.
killer04 says
Really? I haven’t heard anything about that yet :S . Speed is still slow as usual.
Fred says
Thanks Christopher, I will phone the customer service and ask them to look into that.
Can anyone second the info posted by Christopher about the “garantie d’usage”? The variation of my connection speed is somewhat erratic these days.
My Livebox doesn’t heat up that much, but I have a different problem. My set-top box has twice lost the feed from the Livebox. Has anyone else experienced this?

help with Livebox – P2P Problem
do you guys having problem of connecting with software like emule, azureus, kaaza etc..
it starts downloading for sometime(20min-max)then it stops..
im having a low ID on emule, that is “No IP is known of the machine eMule is running on therefore all requests like queue or connection requests to this client have to be routed over the server, the low ID client is connected to.”
ive added tcp & udp ports on the livebox, but still doesnt change anything…
ive try disabling the firewall on livebox still doesn’t work…
ive configured the port on windows firewall on on McAfee also…
when i try to test the port i got the following error:
[[[[Please wait while the ports of your eMule are being tested…
Testing IP: ADSL-133-62.myt.mu (41.212.13x.xx)
Starting TCP connection test…
TCP test failed! UDP test will not be performed]]]]
i believe its a problem of NAT…
ive been phoning the hotliner but they dont seem to know where’s the problem….anyone knows how to change the NAT or know how to solve that!!!!!!
thx

You don’t expect me to tell you how to indulge into piracy, is it?
From the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2003, I quote:
I don’t have Rs. 50,000 handy. I really don’t have the time to spend 5 years in prison because of you. I have two kids. And I still have a lot of research and teaching to do…
I’m slightly ironic here but I really despise using P2P networks to steal proprietary software. Use Opensource software instead. They are as good and they are free :-)
Rama says
hi,
i was not talking about softwares or …piracy,…my problem is that the livebox of MY.T has not been configured properly and they are not being able to reslove the problem. they telling me to try all sort of stuffs..but in vain.
killer04 says
Thats weird cause now since emule seems the programs which downloads the fastest on my pc. I can get 20-30 kb/s with it. If your ports on the livebox is open and emule still gives a low id, you have to keep on restarting the livebox and it will eventually work.
Navin says
Please, i need help. I would like to know how to open all ports on the Livebox. Plz help
armand says
i would like to know after the “garantie d’usage†has used up what will the speed??
Rama says
20-30kb/s!!!r u using myt wanadoo??ive try resetting the livebox several times, still not working.have u added any ports on livebox??
Thierry says
Your ADSL speed depends on your location & the your tel line quality.
It is effective only within 3km. Outside that range your speed
won’t be that great. I’m getting 50-60KB/S on 512kbps.
killer04 says
You mean you get 512kbps after the garantie dusage has been used up? Thats weird cause after mine is used up i only get 128 kbps or even less and i have a 512 kbps connection. I phoned them a couple of times but they did not do anything to solve that problem
killer04 says
BTW to Rama, I noticed when my IP starts with 41.XXX its very hard to download from P2P programs but the web seems faster. So i have to keep on reseting the livebox till my ip becomes 196.XXX. When my ip starts with 196 then i can get high id from Emule and sometimes my download can even reach 40 kb/s on emule. And i opened the ports necessary for emule to work on emule.
armand says
how did you open the ports explain to us
vincent says
Hey killer04!
i’m having exactly the same problem as you and i just called the 8585 about that to see if there’s any way of configurating the livebox so that i don’t get the ip starting with 41,but they told me it’s not possible.
When the ip changes to 41,impossible to use P2P program, utorrent more precisely, but only with ip starting with 196 then i get get decent download rates. The thing that makes me mad is that what if about i let my pc on at night to download something using the ip 196 and in the middle of the night at an unexpected time it changes itself to ip 41,then it would be a complete waste of time,my pc would be turn on for nothing as the download would stop!I just turned on my pc two hours earlier, got the ip 41 but i disconnected and reconnected to get the ip 196 but after only one and a half hour of connection with the ip 196,it changes by itself to ip 41 and my download rate just dropped to ZERO!!!
What do you think about that?Is it not disturbing to get that ip 41.XXX.XXX.XX ?????What can be done abou that?
BTW,my port is opened too for utorrent.
killer04 says
Yeah i agree that it is very annoying that the IP changes automatically like that. Unfortunately i haven’t found a solution to this problem yet. It seems like something completely random, but if i find a way to connect on 196.XXX i will let you guys know.
To Armand to open the ports for a specific program, go to the livebox configuration. Type “admin” both for username and password. On top you will see Serveurs Lan. Click on it. Type ajouter. Then you will have to add the details in the box. If your p2p like emule uses both tcp and udp, you will have to type ajouter once and add the tcp details. For “Du port” and “Au port” add the same port for example mine is 34592. Then click on apliquer. Then repeat the process for the UDP ports. In the box select UDP then enter the UDP port.
BTW the technicians for Mauritius telecom came to my place because i was having some problems with the wifi connection and they told me that the internet has been slow for international downloads as they were having problems with their server. They also said that they removed the I GB garantie d’usage so now we can use the internet to download how much we want to.
Do you guys know if there are any local stuff where i can download interesting stuff? I want to test the 2mb national download speed a bit.
vincent says
Haha!
If only there couuld be interesting things to download from our local servers,it would be fantastic. But unfortunately i haven’t found anything interesting to download yet, almost all interesting stuffs are from international servers.Sometimes i feel that the 2mb they give for local surfing and downloads is a waste because we can’t really use it as it should be,it’s so limited!
Yeah, before when i called 8585(i used to call there a lot)to report a dramatic drop in speed for international surfing and download, they told me that there’s been several reports from my-t users about the same matter and there’s in fact a little problem from their servers(for international)and that the engineers and technicians are making the follow-up aboout that.Hope and wish that they will be qualified enough to be able to fix the problem.
Hey killer04,do you use windows firewall or do you use another firewall?Because i’ve heard that windows firewall doesn’t like P2P programs.I’m using Zone Alarm but it’s using quite a lot of resources. But since i’ve been using ZA my download speed has improved compared to when i used windows firewall.Let me know about that.If only there could be a way to configure the livebox to reject ip address starting with 41.XXX that would make things easier.I just went out for about 4-5 hours and when i came back,i’ve noticed that the ip has already been changed to that stupid 41.XXXX.And had to reset my livebox to get back that decent ip 196.XXX.It’s driving me crazy like hell!!!!
armand says
There is no need to use a firewall and the livebox have a hardware firewall
killer04 says
Unfortunately for the moment the 2mb download speed is not really necessary. The only interesting thing that i found on local servers is an anime called bleach and its provided by nomadlive. Too bad the speed is slow as hell. They said that we were supposed to get great download speeds as the files are hosted on a local server.
For now that only firewall i use is the one integrated in the modem. I tested it on a site which checks the strength of you firewall and it was found out to be very safe. Before i used Zone alarm and sygate and they were very good. I am not sure but i think that my sygate was using less resources than ZA. I dont use the windows firewall as it has a very low rating. But if you want to, you can open its ports by going to control panel —> Security Center —> Manage Security Settings for windows firewall —> exceptions then add ports. This will help you download speeds.
armand says
Nomad server is very slow test it on telecom server
Christopher says
Myt will never work here (i hope that i’m wrong)! For now they’r having slow problems wiz theirs servers (they are not so qualified to), they have got the stupid idea to alloud full speed rate to new users in the expense of those who subscribed at first time. (That’s why somme are getting slower connections and some are getting EXTRA speed) It also explaine why they have banished the 1gb garantie d’usage.
I’ve made a test mire once wiz 9telecom and see the result:
Votre Bande
Passante 76.282 Kbps (9.535 Ko/sec)
I told them that i’m not sure it was ADSL and they asked me to make some test on ncb.intnet.mu where i’ve a download rate of 200kbps/s. (if only there was somthing interesting on this web site) In fact, it’s the only site in mauritius where you can exceed the 200kbps/s that’s why they make test on it.
I’ll keep calme for this month and after that they’ll really know who i am coz i’m very VERY angry wiz them
I’LD LIKE TO KNOW WAT WILL BE THE NEXT THREAD WIZ MYT
killer04 says
Mauritius Telecom are thieves. They just want to steal our money while giving us really poor services. They should think about their customers first before their wallet. If they find that their servers will not be able to give full rate transfers as there are too many people, they should stop allowing people to subscribe to the adsl services for a while until they get a better server instead of making other adsl users suffer. I wonder if there is going to be a good isp in Mauritius one day or if we will always lag behind.
says
Well said killer04!It seems that MT cares more about money than providing at a decent service to its customers, mostly to earlier customers. It’s like they are still selling air-tickets for a flight which has already been filled up to the max!
And christopher, you’re right about that ncb.intnet.mu download testing, they asked me to make that test too when i complained so many times about very slow surfing and downloading on international websites, like i said the 2MB they’re giving us is like trying to buy us,but we’re no fools!!!We all know that there’s nothing intersting to download on local servers. What the hell do they think we’re gonna do with some downloads from the natinal computer board???
Nazim says
That true my friend, Mauritius Telecom is only concern about money. Im just fed up with with my MyT. It goes crazy special when the 1GB is limit is over. If MT continue like that it will end like France Telecom in France.
I wonder what ICTA is doing in Mauritius. Is ICTA here to protect customer or protect MT? I think that ICTA never read newspaper or check blog to find problems of customer. They are just sitting in aircon office and have big big income at the end of each month.
When the price of adsl will finally be reduce?
killer04 says
I think that if a lot of people complain about the service, they will be forced to drop the prices. Anyway to anyone who had adsl 512k before upgrading to my.t what speed do you have now? When i first upgraded i could get adsl 1024/512 but now my download speed is about 470k whereas my upload is 512k.

Its a shame to call our country Cyber Island as the rate of adsl is too high. I had taken adsl 512kb from MT and pay them big money every month just to have weak download rate???
I have made several complaint to MT but in vain. I final have to disconnect my adsl. I think that everyone in Mauritius is fed up with Mauritius Telecom.
killer04 says
Yeah you are absolutely right. MT does not care about the customers. They only want to make money. Too bad there is no serious competitor for mauritius telecom. The other two offer the same price for the service.
armand says
ICTA has revised ADSL to Rs 790 but Nomad did not accept it as it is offering 128kps at Rs890
Its not MT has to be blamed, It has invested in SAFE. If the speed has gone down but be patient it will return back to normal soon. I used a 512kps at my office and its fast like lighting.
Not like Nomad 1 year contract = 1 Year troubles
Stéphane Lee says
512kbps fast as light?
The latency must be killing you.
vincent says
Hey,Armand, what do you mean by ICTA has revised ADSL to RS790?Is is a recent change? And what about the price for My-t(256kbps),is it still Rs950+VAT or has it been reduced too?
Thanks for confirming about that.
Vincent.
killer04 says
I dont think that adsl 512k is fast as lightning. Mauritius Telecom is doing a really poor job. I am supposed to get 1mb but i rarely get it. Most of the time its 512k. The upload is fine though. I can up at 512k.
Gavin says
So Good speed of ADSL the kbps speed to Download all media music, video, picture don`t buy NOMAD Because it will make MAD

killer04 says
Are you mad? ADSL the best in Mauritius??? In other countries you can get adsl 20 MB cheaper than you can get ADSL 512k in mauritius!!! Mauritius is really backwards with outdated technology!

FYI, this is lightning fast.

Considering that i download 600 MB/day will be advantageous if i take My ,T or not?? And make as if i am actually with My.T and that i have download more than 2 gb.. is my download speed considerably reduced and does the ip change after each connection?
and i forgot will i get maximum download speed on p2p and bittorent as i’m am getting with my adsl 128 kbps (14 KB/s)

I have a 10Mbps ADSL 2+ connection at my home in the UK. Yes, I can download lots of data very quickly, but I would quite happily trade it for 512kbps and daily access to the beaches in Mauritius!
Some of the comments are a little puzzling. MT’s primary responsibility is to its shareholders and all they want is a healthy profit. So why complain if MT is only interested in money and not in launching new internet services such as ADSL2+?
Mauritius will always play catchup to the developed nations in this particular area. The demand for ADSL is nowhere near on the same scale as that in the West, so it seems daft to expect “lightening fast” broadband here.
I will however agree with the comments about the quality of service. My 512kbps connection only works at fast speeds at night.
killer04 says
To Jens, they removed the capping thing so now you can download how much
you like. Since i got My.t i downloaded 12 GB on emule in one month.
Stephen the only reason why we complain is because MT is asking too much money for its services which are of poor quality. In other countries you get ADSL for a much cheaper price. So in mauritius as the wage rates are lower than other countries and the ADSL price is higher, we will spend a huge percentage of our income on ADSL for the people who want to have broadband. If we spend too much on ADSL then we wont have enough money for anything else.
jens says
i heard that some regions of the island like port-louis receive a constant throughput of 30 kb/s after the 1 gb? Is that true? and about how much does the download speed oscillate after the capping??!
killer04 says
As i mentioned above they removed the capping so you can get a constant download speed unless there are problems with their server as they always have. Port-louis gets a faster speed than the rest of us as they are nearer to Telecom Tower. ADSL requires you to be closer to your ISP to receive a better download speed.
jens says
36. What happens if I exceed my guaranteed usage allowance with My.T Surf or My.T Surf Options?
You will not be billed any excess usage made beyond your Usage Allowance.
You will note that My.T Surf Services are intended for normal recreational or educational use by individuals and families and the pricing and network architecture have been designed accordingly. Continuous and recurrent excess of usage allowances by customers may reduce the performance of the network and thus be detrimental to other customers.
In the event, that a My.T customer exceeds her/his usage allowance recurrently, MT will notify the customer recurrent excesses and MT may propose alternative packages to the customers at the appropriate charge.
In case the customer continues to engage in such excesses, MT reserves the right to reduce, suspend or terminate the services to the customer.
Killer04 and others who have largely exceed the download limit, have you got any notification?
armand says
30 kb/s ?? thats 240kps still good
It may drop at 25% but above 128Kps

Has anyone of you guy or gal read the newspaper “Le Defi” of this Saturday, more precisely on page 7?Because it is written that the price of ADSL in Mauritius is likely going to be reduced by 26% and has already been approved AND internet service providers have to revise their price accordingly. So if i understand well the price for My-t is gonna change as well.In the same article it’s said that the price for ADSL 128kbps is as follows,Rs730 to be reduced to Rs480,Rs780 to be reduced to Rs535 for 512kbps and for 1mbps,Rs1200 to be reduced to Rs1005.
For those having My-t 256kbps same as me,we are being charged for the same price as normal ADSL 128kbps(Wanadoo),so we should look forward if the revised price for us My-t users(mostly 256kbps)will be same as the revised price for ADSL 128kbps,it may sound stupid in the first place but we never knows what MT reserves us because they can say that our connection is twice as a normal 128kbps ADSL so that’s why the price will a bit higher than the Wanadoo ADSL 128kbps.
armand says
I exceeded my 1Gb on Myt But sill getting 256kps.
Anonymous says
Its good that the price of ADSL will finally fall as it is way too overpriced!
vincent says
To all My-y users,i don’t know if you’re aware about that but i’m gonna tell you anyway.Remember i told you earlier that there will be a reduction in ADSL rates, the “funniest” thing is that i just called 8585 to confirm with MT when the new rate will be applied and the person on the line told me that there won’t be any change/reduction for My-t.I told him that in the news it is said that the reduction concerns all ADSL connections but he told me that for My-t it’s different because MT is giving us quite a lot of things as package, namely the decoder(which i never use and i can count on my fingers how many people is really enjoying the free channels offered on the decoder,i think most people has opted for My-t mainly because they could get 256kbps for the price of a 128kbps ADSL and not really for these channels that can be obtained by other means).I think that thew knew that there was going to be reduction in the ADSL rates,so that’s why they made lots of canvassing and promotion for My-t and abolishing the 1GB limit, just to make people sign the one year contract and then these people will be trapped in this one year contract, forced to pay non-reduced ADSL rates.
One more time this shows how Mauritius Telecom SUCKS!!!When people says thatt MT is THIEF,that’s definitely TRUE!!!I knew MT was preparing something very bitter for us My-t users, but not at this level! In Hell MT can go!That’s how this country will never move forward, wherever there’s part of government involved,it’s always like that, taking money in people’s pocket, that’s what they are really good at!
avinash says
Hi Vincent,
If this is true (let’s wait for some official confirmation…) then we’ll have to mount a massive protest campaign.
vincent says
According to what the guy on the 8585 said, the new ADSL rates will normally appear this coming friday on their website and on newspaper. So,let’s wait and see.
Hey Avinash, just give them a call on the 8585,just to tease them somehow and let’s see what they’ll tell you about that. And let’s keep informed about the situation.
If there should be any kind of massive protest campaign,i’m IN!!!

Well i will also be in the campaign if there is one. My.t is way too expensive for this weak connection that we have. Concerning the decoder i am sure that MT can make up for it with the big amount of abnormal profits that it is earning each month.
I hope that the My.T price goes down and that MT stops tricking people like that. We have the right to enjoy a decent internet connection at a decent price!

It will help to clear your IP therefore rather than resetting the livebox just install it & reset the IP using this software. If you need more help, you can email me on & i will try to help you as much as i can.
Hope this help…

Mauritius Telecom is just thinking how to make money without caring about his customer.
I must wait for a few years to have ADSL under Rs500. For the time being lets only rich people in Mauritius enjoy the ADSL.

What would you recommend. I live in Rose-Hill. Is the connection good? Is it worthwhile? Or should I stick to ADSL 128? (but then at 950.00 it just sucks!)

jens says
Well have you any ideo for the price for 512 kbps? Since mid-day today and till now i’ve not been able to connect with wanadoo ADSL 128 Kbps…
This is really frustating as i depend on the net to work..Any news from Mauritius telecom?? have their servers broken down?
chouaïbe says
well guys i’ve been reading all your comments..really interesting..actually i too i was really pissed off with MT..i even wrote official letters to the managament (they apparently didn’t receive it; by magic they found it after a couple of days after i sent them the Mauritius Post Registered Letter Receipt), i was even invited to Radio 1 to discuss about the ADSL issue, unfortunately I was busy on that particular day.
being in the legal field, i’d like to tell you that the 1 year contract is totally void; because if you are not satisfied with a particular product, the customer has the right to rescind his contract (unfair contract terms act, unfair contract terms and regulations)UK Law..technically we can use that since we are in the commonwealth.
concerning the mauritian laws, it’s like the ADSL..it’s not up-to-date with the technology.
unfortunately there ain’t any precedent in the high court of mauritius where someone has brought to justice a service provider in the technological field..so, who’ll invest thousands of rupees to bring MT to court euh?
the other issue is that, for sure, the SAFE cable is saturated, it’s logical that we have such a poor service, slow speed until the EASSY cable will be launched in about 2yrs time or more. so, MT has an esacape goat conerning that.
now, knowing the real issue to the technical problems, owing to the limitation of the SAFE, can MT makes such huge publicity when they can’t afford what they mean.
thats FRAUD my friends.
FRAUD is something punishable by law.
thats where MT has a real problem.
so, i’ll through the media, shortly, do watch out, i’ll be writing some articles concerning that, perhaps, i’ll make a nationwide appeal, that on a particular month, i would ask all people, who doesn’t depend on the ADSL service to WORK, to return it.
there’ll be more developements on that issue.
to me it’s no more a technical problem due to the SAFE saturation, but the lies behind the marketing of their products even if they know that the wouldn’t be able to offer what they say.
Steevano says
Guys,
The MY.T guys came at place i showed them the problem with the IP address & were really surprise is this is an invalid IP. They willl work on it today itself to see if they can block this IP address. HOpefully this will be sorted out.

No reduction of wanadoo adsl home?
Mauritius telecom is so proud of his 10000 client of adsl.

Mauritius telecom the most sucker company in Mauritius.

Hey Steevano,if it happens that they succeeds in bloking IP addresses starting by 41.XXX.XXX,let me know about that.I’ve called them about that problem too but at that time they said it not possible to block such IP addresses. So keep us informed about that because my download rate(using P2P)sucks once the IP changes to 41.XXX.XXX.

Hey guys,
i’ve just had My.T installed at my place… The internet & the VOD part is alright, however i’m getting some small problems in getting the 6 free TNT channels. When i perform a tnt scan channel sometimes i get only 004 channels detected & i get the message “Reception problem” displayed while trying to play a particular channel !!! I guess the problem is with my antenna… Btw, i have the “l’antenne sapin” & i live in Q.Bornes… i was just wondering whether i need another type of antenna to be able to capture all the 6 channels.
Any1 ever came across this kind of problem???

Guys,
There is one thing to be taken into consideration, you might be swapping to MTML as soon as it launch it products but i would suggest that you wait for some times & see how good & reliable will it be. MT has been here for years & we still are having some problem with their connection but now imagine a new ISP. I will suggest that we wait & see if they give a better QUALITY & RELIABLE service. I’m saying so because i chose Nomad instead of MT at first thinking that they will b providing a good service but Nomad is sh*t & i’ve many contacts there who advise me to go to MT as their product are not reliable so this is why am suggesting to wait & see how MTML will provide us with a good service!!
Cheers,
Steevano.
Steevano says
Hi Vincent,
No worries will keep you all posted about the change.
What they said not possible!! The person who told you this just dont know what to say. The address is being provided by DHCP so they must be able to exclude this address. I’ve explained this to them…
Anyway i will call them tomorrow & get some feedback from them.
For all those using peer to peer, i will suggest that you disable your network hardware via computer –> properties —> hardware –> device manager –> (disable your hardware & enable it again) this solve out my problem & avoid me from either resetting my machinee or livebox (am using the wireless instead of the network cable)
Hope this help

concerning MTML about its reliability..well it’s a company who’s already well settled in India, offering great service overthere, they’ve got the know how in that field, so I don’t think so that there’ll be a problem and above that we are dealing with Indian’s Engineers…there’s no joke with them ;p

I have a very good connection with MY.T since am using the 512kbps one (company paying lol)…. bt the only problem that all of us are facing is the IP 41.XXX.XXX.XXX…

No matter what, we will quit from MT Adsl to MTML.
MTML has the greatest technology. After all they have lots of experience in telecommunication.
MTML are not sucker like Mauritius Telecom and France Telecom. MTML have promise to give the better price and service of Adsl. MTML Antenna are extremely powerful. Not the same as Nomad.
I have heard that MTML will offer Adsl 512Kb for only Rs300 provided ICTA approve his offer!!!
That is why MT has not yet reduce his Adsl home price as he is waiting for MTML.
Believe me, all the customers of MT will swap to MTML soon. That is why MT insist his customer to sign one year contract!

MTML is ready to launch his Adsl and mobile but is still waiting for the approval of ICTA. All depend when ICTA will accept his proposal. As we all know, ICTA may take one week, one month or even six month for the approval. It is not the fault of MTML!
Moereover I dont think that ICTA will agree that MTML Adsl 512Kb be less that Rs400. As ICTA work under the control and orders of Mauritius Telecom. ICTA is not in Mauritius to protect customer but to protect Mauritius Telecom. ICTA sucks!

dont know about you guys but here its a NOMAD 64kbps connection and all i an say in summary is that Dial-up is much much much (did i say much?) faster than my Nomad connection and i often resolve to dial-up..
some might ask or suggest the customer service, but they are worst than MT ones…to sucj an extent that phoning them will result to serious headache and sometimes their answers leave feeling that its written stupid on your forehead
i strongly advice anyone to think well before signing at Nomad koz you will for sure share the frustration i have had for nearly a year..
i agree it is cheap, but not worth the price and given that dial-up is faster that it,i think its a matter of time for the company to face serious problems unless they take corrective measures which is still to be seen
for curious ppl out there, chk here : http://forum.nudodo.net/ and get a glimpse of some complaints and judge by yourself
as for My.T,i have heard that its doing fine and i have tested the 144kpbs MTML offer at Infotech which is also not bad…waiting for the competitor(MTML) to get on the field now ;)

i am going to get myt very soon but i am a doubtful about whether it really suits me…i currently have a 128k and i download like 1gb!!!! per DAY!!!! that makes it like 30gb per month!!! i guess i will consume more than 30gb per month with a 256k connection!!….
is there any consumer like me who has switched to myT??? if yes, have u been notified by MT that u are doing too much excess??? i can still revert back my subscription as i haven’t signed anything yet… reply to me as soon as possible plz… they r goin to install myT tomorrow
killer04 says
Well i have myT 512k and i download like 2GB per day. They haven’t warned me about anything yet. If they did too many people would revert back to their old connection and i am sure they would not like that. Thats why i think that they haven’t warned me yet.
Anyway does anyone have the installation cd for myt? Do we really need it or we can just download the driver from the internet and install it just like for the wifi? And did anyone try updating the firmware of their modem? If so does it work better?

Hello,
Is anybody having the problem where your IP Address remains 41.xxx.xxx.xxx even MT did not know where the problem is. Am actually having this problem for the past 3 days now where the IP remain 41.xxx.xxx.xxx. Resetting the livebox or whatever hasn’t change anything my peer 2 peer are not working anymore as well as nobody can access my PC via remote assistance from msn messenger but still my connection is good bt sometimes not. I tried the tips that i’ve explained in the blog but not working anymore :'( . Have phone MT several times with no reply….
Please help…
Hi Anonymous,
You can swap to MY.t but as you may have seen in this blog there is quite a lot of trouble with it but has also it advantage…. better than Nomad i can say that’s for sure. I used to have Nomad 512kbps but the download rate was 256 bytes/secs can you imagine that for a 512kbps. I’ve break my contract but they are charging me Rs5000 for that & believe me they are not going to get a single cents from my company….
Hope this help
Cheers,
Steevano.

Concerning IP 41.XXX,i called 8585 again and it seems that they’re already aware about that kind of problem and they already knew i was going to ask them if there’s a way to block such IPs.They said to me that in fact there’s a problem in MT and the technicians are working on it and it may take two days to one week to fix it.But now i don’t know if that’s true or it’s just another lie just to end up quickly with me on the phone. The problem i’m getting right now is that the IP changes too often and too soon and sometimes when i go out or at night it just changes to 41.XXX and all my downloads get stuck.
I advise all those whose getting such problems as Steevano and I to call 8585 and to ask for the same, the more people complaining the better it is,then MT will see that it’s not only a bunch of people who’s having this kind of problem and may be they’ll show more consideration to us and make a quicker move, for the benefit of all of us.
Cheers,
Vincent.

I’m getting a small technical problem with the sagem wifi utility. Actually, everything works fine when i login as Administrator on Windows XP(SP2), however when i login as guest/limited user… the sagem wifi does not work & no network is detected.
Well… i decided to bypass the wifi utility & use wireless zero configuration(WZC) of windows to setup the wireless LAN. Now, the usb wifi adapter works fine even on a guest/limited account. But, sometimes i lose connection for some seconds & then it connects !!!
With the sagem wifi utility, there’s no problem of disconnection.
Any1 using the sagem wifi usb adapter ever experienced thid kind of problem ???

Hi,
Thanks for your comments Vincent. The MT guys came to my place & replace the Livebox but still the same problem & therefore this clearly shows to them that there is indeed a problem with their System. I showed them some screenshot of the Invalid IP taken from the configuration of the live box etc..& they told me they have never heard about this problem. I’ve explained them that am not the only one having this kind of problem & they will now investigate further more.
Regarding 8585 i got really upset calling them as they hold me over 30 mins then the phone hang up . But thanksfully i’ve got them today & the guy to whom i’ve spoken said that he did not hear about this problem & will check & get back to me but as you may have guess the latter never did so.
What i’ve done is that i’ve taken some screenshot of my IP (www.whatismyip.com) this will give you your realy IP address.. & also screenshot of the livebox showing that invalid IP address.
Guys if you want to get rid of this Invalid IP problem, we should all send them screenshot clearly showing the invalid IP and as Vincent say if we all complain about this they will take us more seriously…
You can mail them on . Let me know if this sounds goood for you?
Cheers,

Vanessa,it’s true that Nomad sucks,as i used to say and as i will always say.But this time ICTA did not go in favor of Nomad,ICTA has finally approved that MT reduced its price for ADSL.You can have a look here:http://www.servihoo.com/ouroffers/wooadslhome.php,as you can see MT has already updated its new page with new reduced prices for ADSL.
This time ICTA has decided not to fall for Nomad, else everybody would think that these two are real buddies and may be something fishy is going on between them. That’s a good way to give that stupid Nomad a lesson, how dare a so small inefficient ISP like that wants to block a giant like MT from reducing the price in ADSL,i’m not a big fan of MT this much but i’m sure that other people would agree with me that Nomad will never be able to compete with MT,whatever in terms of giving satisfaction to its clients or price.

Regarding the peer 2 peer i think we can download a limit of 3gb per month for peer 2 peer but unlimited download via web or unlimited surfing…
I’ve called MT & they said that for MY.T they dont know whether they are blocking peer 2 peer but for the usual ADSL line they are not blocking anything.. The problem is that i found myself confused as some of the MT guys said not blocking & other blocking anybody got an idea what is true or not please?
HI killer04,
What port you are using please coz am just having low id now & my ip is continously on 41.xxx.xxx.xx

They do not know what they are blocking? Either they are retards or they are liars. Concerning the 41.XXX problem you will have to keep on resetting your livebox. Unfortunately it will take a lot of time to get the 196 ip, but you have to keep on trying. As for the ports, i am using
54592 for TCP and 12535 for UDP. I think we have to keep on changing the ports from time to time as they will probably block them if they see that too many people are downloading a lot from the ports.
Anyway how much do you guys get on BT? Most of the time, i get less than 1Kb/s. Rarely i get a good speed. And if you send a file to another person who has MY.t what speed can you get?

Hi Steevano,
Nice to know that you get full speed on the 196 IP. If you get 60 kb/s you must have myT 512k. If so can you tell me your upload speed? Mine is 512k. Seems weird. Maybe they made a mistake there or maybe its the true upload of myT 512k. I just wanted to confirm this. Anyway since a few days did you guys notice a drop in speed on HTTP?
Anyway i telephoned 8585 concerning the 41.XXX problem. They seemed clueless about this problem. They told me to shut off my computer and livebox till tomorrow so they will fix it. What a joke!!! They seem really inexperienced.

Hi all, thats a very useful blog here!

avinash says
Hi Humbug,
Interesting question… In my opinion, you can use your Livebox however you like. But YOU are responsible if YOU indulge into piracy.
Piracy is a violation of copyright law as far as I know and is therefore illegal in Mauritius. Therefore if you illegally download the latest version of Photoshop then you theoretically can be sued by Adobe.
But if you use the same technology (i.e. Bittorrent or any other P2P software) to download the latest Ubuntu Linux distribution, then this is perfectly legitimate.
From Wikipedia,
DADVSI doesn’t prevent someone using P2P “legally” i.e. no piracy whatsoever.

Till now am having a very good connection via emule using the system i’ve found. But still this need to be tested for at least 1 week to be certain that this works.
As for those having 512kbps i think the limit download is supposed to be 3GB. I’ve already download 2GB lets see once i’ve download my 3GB if i get the low ID Again & if so then i assume that My.T is doing this DELIBERATELY.

Search for your Bit torrent client here http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Sagem/Livebox-Fast-3202/Livebox-Fast-3202index.htm
The guides are really simple.
To humbug
Yes downloading copyrighted files is illegal. But in Mauritius i dont think that anyone has been caught for downloading files. But download at your own risk! If you want to be safe from government and anti piracy authorities, you can always download an ip blocker such as peer guardian 2. It will also help to reduce the amount of wasted data on Bit torrent.
Humbug says

I’ve upgraded to Wanadoo ADSL 128 in September 2005. Till April 2006, I always enjoyed a 12-13 KBps download rate.
But since then, during the day, I received only 7-8, now it’s even worse. Numerous phone calls to MT resulted in some of their technicians to check the phone lines, finding nothing abnormal.
All they would tell you is that MT is not responsible for slow download speeds from external websites. A qui le tort?

everybody seems talking of myT and nomad but no one is talkin about the 3G emtel is offering. anyone on emtel here?
btw i am on nomad and i find really good, can someone tell me the problems they are experiencing with it?
Pavit says
Wanadoo ADSL 512KB – Good download speeds considering my exchange distance, and TCP packet overheads.
MyT – Still nothing cons to say about the speed. Except I would like to get a better sound experience on the vod package, which is mono sound atm afaik or they could upgrade to HD quality soon :D .
Nomad – As long as Modem is in a good Line of Sight speed tend to be ‘ok’
Emtel 3G – Best Mobile internet connectivity I’ve used (past 1 1/2 years). As long as ur phone (if U’re using one) has a good network reception you get near full download spees of 3G line, around 44KB/s. And best is you connection doesn’t get dropped when you’re on the move between the network cells. Took laptop from Port Louis and drove back home to Vacoas and my online radio station kept playing fine.
And people shoule stop ranting about excessive internet prices in this country. (maybe except for a monthly flat rate for 56K dial up connection)
There “was” the installation cost of safe, there “is” the maintenance cost of safe, there “is” the rent cost of the data house in paris or Hong Kong. Add all of that and you’ll get the high price we pay for internet in MU, don’t compare our little country to other big ones as we have an added cost on everything we bring here.
MT favours speed on a true business line, i.e a leased line for companies that’s more important to them. Currently home users just do one thing on their broadband line, downloading pr!on, music, softwares, divx and keeps a p2p app running of which 95% is illegal stuffs flowing and puts tons of stress on their routers (with all those sessions open on the poor router’s table list) and this by itself eats up most of our country’s international bandwidth. So you want MT to spend “more money” buying “more bandwidth” for you to download “more illegal stuffs” or Spend less exponential money and help decrease overall cost thus helping to lower your Internet cost.
avinash says
Hi Pavit,
I have to agree with you about the po!rn, music, softwares, divx and p2p app. I said the same thing some time back.
As for the price, I also think we can’t compare what is being sold here to, say, prices in the US or in Europe. Mauritius is far and SAFE is not free. One way to decrease cost would be to have more traffic inside the country (i.e. have more local servers and content). I don’t know why MT does not offer a (decent) hosting service (i.e. with scripting languages + a database).
As for the bandwidth, 128kbit/s or even 512kbit/s is good enough for browsing but unsufficient to correctly experience the new Web 2.0 applications like YouTube, Last.fm, Odeo etc.
Innovation comes when (young) people use a service like it is intended to be used (i.e. experiencing YouTube with a high bandwidth connection for example) and come across some usability or functional problems. They solve the problem and create a new application. That new application becomes popular. And voilà, wealth is created!
Mauritius is missing the boat. It’s still time to do something about it. Give us more bandwidth ;-)

I don’t have the same prob as you nor do i know people who have the prob. You should call MT and tell them about the prob so that they can fix it as soon as possible. If the prob is not there then something could be wrong with your livebox.
Dj Kerm says
I understand your point Killer04..
The thing is that from 5 to about 9am the ip does’t change!!!
meaning that it’s not a livebox problem.. But a peak hour problem !
A friend of mine technician at MT told me that in fact there is a
new system at MT “autorepair” feature , supposed to raise your bandwidth but at the same time changing your ip… He also added that many people are having problems, and some customers even returned “cancelled” their livebox contract.
May be you are not having problems due to your location !!
Dj Kerm says
My livebox is always connected to the main..do you think i should switch it off when i shutdown?? can this be the cause!!!?
BlueBerry says
Isn’t it high time to ban those p2p users from clogging the Internet bandwidth of this country? MyT subscribers will very soon experience what is happening to today’s Wanadoo ADSL 128 users. Why? Most of them will contribute to its loss in quality with more Rapidshare and other such file sharing services which offer nothing better than worthless rubbish to millions of users worldwide! What has today’s youth come to, esp our supposedly tech-savvy teens who fail to utilize the Net decently and prefer to waste time and bandwidth on pron and more pron?
(I read in Computer Power Magazine that 2/3 of all video DL over the Net is adult-related! Et Maurice n’est nullement épargné…)
What websites do most Mauritian users like to visit (I won’t comment on its accuracy but it looks quite fair to me)?
Check it out here: http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?cc=MU&ts_mode=country&lang=none
Oh my! Not a so rosy picture for us.
avinash says
At least Wikipedia is #11…
It’s a fact that most of the bandwidth ISP provide is being used to download porn, warez and illegal music/video. I personally know some people who download multiple divx films everyday.
Someone from MT once told me that 5% of users use 95% of the bandwidth.
Personally I am always browsing, watching some videos here and there and downloading some patches but I don’t download more than 3-4 gigabytes per _month_.
This is what some people are downloading on their 512kbit/s ADSL line per _day_ :-(
Logically they should pay their ADSL bill more than me!
Killer04 says
Dj Kerm i think that you are right about the location problem. I noticed that a lot of people i know living in rose-hill and other areas where there is a lot of adsl users get a low speed. No need to switch off the livebox when you shutdown or else you won’t be able to receive phone calls.
And to you two i agree that people are abusing the p2p too much but otherwise they have the right to use their bandwidth as they want to as they pay high prices for it. Last time i checked pron was not illegal as long as you are not downloading copyrighted material.

I’ve been using nomad 128 for about 9 months now…and it sucks for being unreliable.
DJ Kerm says
Thanks Roshan !!
But my utorrent port is already open in myt config
which tracker are you using??
Roshan says
Well i use several trackers. I mostly use demonoid.. (u get get torrents here :www.demonoid.com – it has it’s own privatw trackers!)
Check this out on how to increase your downloading speed: http://www.johntp.com/2006/04/19/how-to-increase-download-speeds-of-utorrent/
My downloads literally doubled it’s speed when using those tweaks!
Killer04 says
I also get the same speed as you but there was a time when i was getting
about only 1 kb/s even though there were more seeders than leechers. Anyway torrents from demonoid download fast here. Too bad now my emule doesnt work even though i tried to randomise ports.
DJ Kerm says
How do you fix your ip under windows??
Someone told me that you must enter your ip info
in network connections “tcp properties”
Is this true??? to be able to download correctly with torrents using myt
Harry says
Hi everyone.. First i have to say thanks to Mr Avinash for creating such a wonderful blog which is also very helpful..
So guys ive nomad 64 at home and my contract will end in 1 month and im finking of moving to myt. Well, nomad is gud 4 me, its true at first was having problems but its improved a lot. but wiv the price of myt reduced, i would like to knw ur advices n opinions on myt, mtml, wanadoo adsl.
Does the 1 Gb download limit still applicable? Hope to hear from you soon..
Thanks
Dj Kerm says
Not 1gig limit! but no priority after 1st gig downloaded..
that is,once you got your 1st gig ,you can drop to even 2-3kbs
killer04 says
You should get myt as its more stable and faster than nomad. A technician told me that they removed the 1 gb limit and i believe him as whenever i download more than 1 gb my speed remains the same.
Harry says
so dats gr8 news if they removed it. But have they upgraded their server is the question now. me 2 ive heard they will very shortly remove the 1 gb limit. N wat abt the VoD? Is it useful? wat abt the image quality? n normally wat download speed u get from myt? Thx 4 ur replies..hope u’l help me guys..
Roshan says
To Harry:
“But have they upgraded their server is the question now. me 2 ive heard they will very shortly remove the 1 gb limit”
— They have already waived this 1GB limit. NO MATTER HOW MUC U DOWNLOAD
“N wat abt the VoD? Is it useful?”
— Well, the movies out there are crap.. I still have the 500rs credit left, which they offer u when u subscribe to MyT.
“wat abt the image quality?”
— Not terrible. But the sound, sounds nothing like Shit. The sound quality is bad.. TV5 sound is mono
“n normally wat download speed u get from myt?”
— It depends on the end-servers. On RS i get something like 15kbps. On torrent 0.1-60kbps. On average u should get about 30kbps.
Here is a screenshot of utorrent: http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3571/42m52tmpii9.jpg
I hope this will help u in your choice.
Harry says
Thx Roshan i fink u have answered all my questions n made my decision(of moving to myt) easy. Thx man.. Anifing else to add abt myt?? Is it reliable? Have u experienced livebox problems?
And wat abt utorrents? Ive heard a lot abt this n i did try it once but the speed i got was poor. Maybe it’s bcoz of nomad 64. Any useful advice how to increase download speed on utorrent? Thx 4 ur replies guys.. keep me informed..
Roshan says
Thanks.. I have once messed up my config (1 day after installing myt) & i’ve called them and on the day after they came and fixed it. I have experienced no problems so far. If you use µTorrent u should open ports on ur config. Look at post 208. On how to increase speed on post 213.
Somrtimes I get 150-170 kbps on µTorrent when it reach it’s peak… but it don’t last for long… so sad. I will post a screenshot later.
Roshan says
Yeah.. MyT is way better than nomad(R u mad?)
Harry says
hey guys recently i heard that nomad will improve but at first didnt quite believe it koz it was not the first time we’ve been hearing this. But i can confirm now that its reali the case. Im getting some nice download speeds since 1 week n i hope it continues. As for myt, well ive heard that one shud pay Rs 2000 deposit.. Ooops me gona get 4 months of nomad wiv that!!!!

Hi everyone!
I’m not sure if I can post it here but here’s a question for you.
When I was on MT ADSL service before switching to MYT, I was able to connect remotely to my home pc using VNC.
With MYT I can’t even get a reply from a ping of my public ip iddress, let alone connecting with VNC to my PC.
Any ideas on how to solve the issue? I tried everything but still no solution in sight.
Kshl says
hi guys!! do you hav any news abt the progress of mtml concerning it being an isp in mauritius???
Killer04 says
Bruno you have to open the ports in your livebox and if you dont know the port number you will have to switch off the firewall in the livebox which i dont recommend.
Bruno says
Thx Killer04,
I tried the port forwarding for remote desktop but I got it all wrong the first time.
I’ll try again as soon as I get some spare time. ;-)

hey does anyone know about mtml? is MTML planning to launch ADSL? if yes, WHEN WILL MTML START PROVIDING ADSL SERVICE?
Thnx
Eddy Young says
In response to Avinash’s comment about certain subscribers downloading several GB of data per day at the detriment of others, I think they are blatantly violating the fair-usage policy that comes de-facto with broadband subscriptions.
If I were to complain about slow download speed, my ISP would identify those users that are causing poor connection in the contention area, then take action against them. But, of course, in Mauritius, businesses are conducted differently: ISPs will not take action so as not to lose customers. But by not doing so, they alienate the rest. Which is not a big problem for them because users do not complain anyway. Well, they whine, but they do not complain ;-)
As for MTML providing ADSL service, what about… never? :-)
selven says
saw someone connecting with a speedo f 212kbps with an mtml fone.
Micheal Scoffield says
my friends has MTML, it seems that when you modify the configuration of your modem, that is, the maximum speed (bps), your connection speed also changes
therefore, if you change it to 921600, you will get a connection of about 921 Kbps..LOL!!
N thats 100% true i’ve seen it myself
How’s that possible?

do u have some contact there?

*you meant 2mb/s
If only you could somehow get access to enough space in that pages.intnet.mu thing, and the ability to execute process in the background their, definitely (hoping that pages.intnet.mu has priviledged bandwidth to the outside world), you can definitely just suck files you need on that server, then download it at a very high speed.
unfortunately, pages.intnet.mu offers only 50MB storage capacity and doesn’t offer you (normally) php support unless paid. But as you may have seen, dudes who have bought intnet.mu account with php support have a lot of sanitization to do.

hmm, i’ve been reading all above, although ppl uses p2p massively for downloading illegal contents an pr0n, p2p itself isn’t illegal, and an isp isn’t suppose to block that.
hmmm could there be a flaw in the law? :
——————————————–
Any person who, knowingly discloses any password, access code, or any other means of gaining access to any program or data held in any computer system –
(1) for any wrongful gain;
(2) for any unlawful purpose; or
(3) knowing that it is likely to cause prejudice to any person,
shall commit an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding 50,000 rupees and to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 5 years.
————————————————
From the bold selection, (3), if I were the owner or manager of an enterprise, and I got tipped that one of my employees are keeping information which he isn’t suppose to keep in that machine, and to fire him, I order another employee to gain access to his box (box of the company we are working for), then I am committing an offence??? That’s flawed! They can’t put ‘any computer system’ there. This should be corrected.

hey guyz!
I’m really glad I found this blogging site where i can finally communicate with Mauritians…
I have a very serious question to ask to MyT users…I have a question:
———————————
Q: I can’t download torrents on MyT. some people say that i have to open the port that the torrent program uses. But how in the livebox configuration can i achieve this?
———————————
And I have a comment concerning MyT. Since the beginning, I had full 256 kbps speed throughout the month (for about 6 months!). And for your info, I download really much. I can download up to 2.5 GB per day throughout the month! But the last month was disastrous!!! speed downgrades to 64kbps when 1 GB limit is exceeded! It’s so annoying!
But I’ve remarked that after intervals of 2 to 3 days, MT gives MyT users the possibility to download another 1GB…then speed resumes with very low priority! But frankly speaking, this thing of losing priority after 1 GB is simply STUPID from MT!!! REALLY stupid!!!
Oh i would have forgotten…
Concerning the 2mbps speed for local connections, it’s not true!!
When i have low priority, even when i surf servihoo.com, it’s still REALLY SLOW!!!
What’s MT trying to do with MyT users??huh??
This is so dishonest!
Thanks for helping, I really need the solution to the above asked question. :)
Badir says
Hey guyz no need to reply to my question, I just read someone’s post above.
It has helped. Finally it’s simple to open a connection…
But still, MyT remains a nightmare!
btw great thanks and congrats to Avinash for the blogging site! :)

Badir,
Most ISPs include a “fair usage” clause in their contracts. Basically, the fair usage states users should be considerate of others. In my book, 2 GB worth of download on a daily basis is an abuse of the service, especially on a 256 kbps connection and considering the limited bandwidth available to the overall population of Mauritius.
No wonder that MT will continue to impose limits on download size and speed when you and so many others are not abiding by the fair usage clause.
Now, before you start yelling at me for revealing the truth, you should know that all ISPs here have such a clause, even if bandwidth is virtually unlimited over here.
On my 4 mbps connection, my speed is throttled to about 75% of the full speed for 1-2 hours if I download unusually high volume of content. By “unusual”, I mean if I start downloading 2 GB daily while my normal usage is 500 MB on average. In reality, I estimate that my download is about 4 GB a month, which is peanuts really considering that I have a 4 mbps connection. So, based on the fair usage, I was able to download the whole 3.5 GB of Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 without throttling because my ISP thinks that this is not something that I do everyday.
Perhaps you should exploit the fair usage policy in a cleverer way, say, download 2GB one day, then limit your download for a couple of days before downloading another 2GB, and so on. You could possibly trick the traffic-shaping software into thinking, “Hey, this guy is not so abusive of our bandwidth after all, let’s cut him some slack.”

Thanks for this Avinash.
Badir says
Thx for the explanation Eddy Young. I didn’t know about this fair usage clause.
Well if what you’re saying about ‘tricking’ the ISP by reconsidering my downloading schedule.
It’s true that the contract for MyT implements the 1GB bandwidth limit and I can’t really fight against it.
But there’s something I would like to add.
ADSL users ( like my friends and I ), download really, I mean REALLY much daily. It’s also a true fact that we should consider the fair usage policy you’ve introduced. But for the amount of money we’re paying for Internet connection in Mauritius, I don’t think that ideally, MT should annoy ADSL (not MyT) users for any ‘abuse’ in Internet traffic.
According to me, Internet isn’t only for surfing (which in the latter case wouldn’t cause any bottleneck anywhere in the world or lack of bandwidth since the bandwidth usage for surfing is really minor – a 1GB package is surely enough monthly for the average users). Large file transfers also form part of the Internet traffic (I’m not talking about the Legal part here (e.g. downloading illegal stuffs and so on…)) It’s just that ISP’s provide for these kind of ftp and http transactions over the NET.
People are paying for 24/7 Internet connectivity.
Afterall at the end of the month, we’re paying the full fees and nothing less.
And it’s true that ADSL contracts have been devised by Legal agents, putting the ISPs at every right.
The average users can only afford only up to 512 connection and not the 2Mb bandwidth that Business users pay in MRU. And we can’t stop people from abusing bandwidth. People is paying…people want service (and the best out of it if possible)..
So ideally speaking it’s all the ISP’s responsibility to provide the adequate resources and bandwidth to better serve the whole island and not make it a miser or a penalty for the average internet users. Besides, if we’re really willing to make Mauritius a Cyber-Island, I think that a cheap ADSL connection with good QOS is REALLY essential! Contrast the service provided locally to the ones provided abroad.
I’ve got a question for ya,
How about the privileged, high QOS, and unaffected bandwidth service given to the MINORITY business ADSL users in relation to the low QOS provided to the MAJORITY of average users? It’s true that business users are paying way over the money paid by average users. But is money the only way to good and fair service?
Thx
:)
PS: I didn’t mean to offend anyone nor any organisation nor ISPs in my post!
Badir says

Reponse a Julien :
Reply to Badir:
Mind you, I’m not condoning what MyT are doing, but I can understand their situation. With only the SAFE cable available for broadband and so much demand, they are forced to prioritise the allocation of bandwidth. Unfortunately, the big money comes from businesses (despite what you may think), so they are the ones getting priority. Hopefully, in the future, with more bandwidth available to the island — merely more ISPs and competition will not resolve the problem — Internet users will have better service. Till then, be considerate towards other users and allow them their turn to download :-)
After all, it’s no use kicking and screaming about slow connections when what you are doing with the connection is not entirely legit anyway. Imagine taking the case to court and being asked to explain how the slow connection is affecting you…
“Err… my porn download is slow. Even downloading the pirated games are slow…”

Voici donc mon article:
Mes Problèmes avec Mauritius Telecom:
La connexion My.T :

As for my contract with Unlimited Dwnld and upload, Telecom refused to do anything about it… They are now saying that the ADSL is really unlimited… They are playing with words… Before, they said that it was limited to 1GB…. Now they refuse to accept that the 1GB is a limit… they changed the word to “We guaranty full connection up to 1GB, and beyond that we do not guarantee the speed!” This 1GB they are talking about is still a limit!
Reuben says
btw Avinash… who are you? I just did 3 years of Electronics and computer science engineering @ uom!!! I’m also an avid photographer …. 29k pics ++ know me?

It’s true that MT is playing with its clients…They know that…we know that… everybody knows it.
But very few people have the guts to step forward and talk! Here’s where i congratulate you Reuben!!

I immediately stop you for the last part of your reply… In court, I don’t think I have to answer what I’m doing on net or what I’m downloading my dear. And there’s no place where i mentioned porn or pirated stuffs.
If I have to appear in court, I’ll surely defend my case on the following points:
-with low priority others are having up to 128kbps minimum whereas I’m having less than 64 kbps.
-and when I’m having low priority, I can’t use MyT Television. It simply doesn’t work…
-Phone over IP doesn’t work and has never worked here.
So if the whole MyT population put hands together, we have enough ideas to nail down MT.
Besides, I previously said that I can’t beat the contract afterall. Coz i’ve signed it anyway…So i have to abide to the limit imposed (but not to a speed of 64 kbps…never!)
But you’re laying emphasis on the LEGAL part and we here are emphasizing on mostly the LOGIC part here…Believe me, MT has all the resources required to give us the full bandwidth in MyT this i can assure you… And besides, MT itself went house to house to prompt ADSL users to shift to MyT… So before stepping to this decision, MT should have thought well about it.
What most of MyT users here are accusing MT of is the injustice imposed on MyT users…
coz afterall even if I were not on MyT, I may be an ADSL users and still downloading at full speed 24/7 with no restriction given to me!! So that’s where MyT users are accusing MT of stupidity due to this 1GB limit…Really stupid!
Besides, MyT users are currently a minority compared to ADSL Wanadoo users.
So “usage fair” or watever, it has no reasonable output when viewed on different angles.
cheerz ;)

Hahaha, you must be joking, law in mauritius? :p that’s a myth, as long as you got the money and political power, law doesn’t apply, so even if the whole population decides to agree with you, you won’t be able to do anything. This is not a movie.

Reuben, wow you are lucky that calls to 8585 are free, man you would have paid a lot in customer support. You’d better be at Tai-Bo and investing your money there. :p
Btw, I’m also seriously reconsidering my MYT connection. All the fuss about the 1GB limit is really a problem when you are on the 256k connection. I switched on the 512k and I guess I’m being capped at 3GB instead of the advertised 10GB for 512k. The price I’m paying is the same as what I would have paid on wanadoo connection.
The next time I’m capped I’ll be returning the livebox with a thanks but no thanks.
I hope your ok man. It’s been a while we haven’t met. Take care. Cheers.

Reponse a Reuben,

Hi Julien…
I would like to add something here.
I think that Reuben is well versed in the IT section. So concerning Virus control on his PC and other addware or spyware, I don’t think that this is an issue for him nor for me…
Let me explain how it goes with MyT nowardays…
Here’s the explanation of how it goes with my MyT connection:
The problem of slowdown in internet speed began as from the beginning of last month.
At the beginning of this month, I had full speed for about 2 1/2 days.
Then the speed drops to 64kbps and keeps this speed for about 2-3 days (sometimes 4).
Then, I get full speed of 256kbps for about 1/2 a day and then the connection resumes to 64kbps afterwards again…
I don’t think that if I don’t use the 256kbps bandwidth given for the 1/2 day periods, I’ll get it back later.
Cheerz…

instead of fighting over for things that will never change (or takes years to change, i remember once adsl was like a dream, took years to come), why don’t we try to find a solution, :p whether we like it or not, porn is an important part of the daily internet usage, so is any other thing, :p why not contribute to have a sort of cache server locally to keep everything downloaded by users(whole island) :p most things that we are downloading probably has been downloaded by other Mauritians, if once it gets downloaded and cached locally, it shall help others download it, MyT doesn’t have to worry about wasting its international bandwidth :p this way, it can even give priority to mass downloaders, since it will in a way help to reduce international traffic in the end :p
we just have to keep the legal issues away … because, the downloader is reponsible for what he downloaded, so we can log it, and if ever there’s any legal issues, we can put the blame on the ip of that downloader, we don’t get caught up in the legal issue, as we are just a cache server… (MyT could implement it itself), gygabytes and terabytes of space is no longer a problem nowadays… probably, they see this short term cost too much, but they don’t figure out that in the long run it would be benefiting them.
we could after disk space run out, delete oldest file first :p
Note: if you implement this, i want to have apriority of access on that server, because its my idea, and i am bad!

Does MT apply this clause, is it void now or is telco waiting to wipe out all competition before enforcing it? :
“You will not be billed any excess usage made beyond your Usage Allowance.
In case the customer continues to engage in such excesses, MT reserves the right to reduce, suspend or terminate the services to the customer.”

btw, i just noted the following:
** GB (gigabyte) refers to guaranteed volume allowance per month. This monthly guaranteed volume allowance depends on our chosen My.T Surf option . Any additional MB consumed over and above will NOT be billed.
MT is cunning, according to this, if you signed the contract, it didn’t meant that you are entitled to get a fixed or guaranteed download speed for the First 1GB or 3GB (depending on your package), it just states that you are guaranteed to be able to download 1GB or 3GB of stuffs…but if you get a speed that makes you download 1GB in 1 month.. the contract still holds!
look well the part where they talk about speed http://www.myt.mu/myt_surf.php
note that they used the word “jusqu’a %vitesse_max%”, so they actually limited you to the max speed, they never mentioned for speed the words “a minimum of %speed%” nor “a speed of atleast %speed%”
note that %speed% has just been used to represent the package you got, e.g 256,512,1024…
basically… by signing the contract, you all got conned :p

It’s Ok Avinash, I thought you had it somewhere and would release it.
Anyway I will post the whole story again.
Well it happened that my line got crossed with my in-laws one on 11th Oct.
No more telephone and MY.T services.
It took MT up to the 15th to reset the lines at distance as they said.
However I noticed that there was no connection for internet. So my father in law called them to see up for the matter and MT said that matter will be dealt accordingly.
So on the 17th I got connected but the connection is so slow that a tortoise would go faster. It’s like downloading 56kb of anti-virus patch and it took at least 10 Mins then the connection is blown out.
So I called 8585 and drawn to their attention that the connection is so slow. The answer they gave i sthat my connection has been over 1 gig (for 10 days checking mails, downloading anti-virus patches, surfing some 30 Mins daily and some poker online playing for at least 2-3 hours by my brother in law.) it was quite surprising since I’ve been doing this the very first day I’ve accepted MY.T and never got such a slow connection. The more-so that when I signed the contract there was no such agreement told to me! and I got the mail print out where no where it was mentionned this 1 gig limit.
So they promised that they will what they can do for me and post an issue for me.
The 18ht nothing again and the connection is a s slow. So gain I called 8585 and this time they told me that since my connection was over 1 gig now they could not register a complaint for me. I would have to call personally at MY.T office for any complaint. What a Customer service!!! For a Cyber Island like Mauritius!! Again I argued that there should be a problem with the line and the lines crossing is for something and that when reseting the lines, my Livebox parametres could have been affected.
No way they stood on the fact that my use was over 1 gig and that was the point and it will be so until it’s refreshed till next month. I insisted that a complaint be registered and that technicians should come to my place on Saturday as It’s the only day that I am at Home. They said they will try to see about it and I left my mobile number to contact me.
19th, Friday night nothing no calls and I had to call 8585 again and they said bluntly that they could do nothing as they are just a ‘service dépannage online’ and I have to lodge a complaint personally and they could do nothing for me.
So the 20th I called at MY.T office and had to get the whole story again and I was quite furious and wrote a complaint to the MT director and the lady there promised that it will be escalated.
However, she was far more intelligent than the 8585 people and understood that there could be a fault on the line and accepted to sent technicians to my place and as I was on leave that suited me well.
The technicians came and bingo!! The Livebox parametres were tampered when the line was reset and they had to change the live box and they discovered that there was a fault on the line. After their intervention I got internet back again not that very fast but at reasonable speed to download anti-virus patches and check my mails. But to download a MS update of 65 MB it took me more than 3 hrs!!! and have to forget about Online Poker as you could loose your place quite easily for connection problems.
It left such a bad taste as the 8585 people attitude sticking to the limit of 1 gig as reason and some people would say even donkeys would have acted differently!!!
MT people are not always right and MT should consider upgrading it’s people as well it’s level of technology and better online service Customer Advisors.
And for the contractual agreement, Selven posted on the 28th, I agree 100% with him. We should certainly do something about this!! Is it not said currently that “Le client est Roi”, even in a monopoly market we can do something, we all have to write to ICTA, ACIM, copy to the Minister for IT, the Prime Minister, Minister of Commerce and 3 main news paper of the Island.
It will surely create quite an awareness and even post this on the WEB and may be when the IT World sees how unrealistic THE CYBER ISLAND, TIGER OF THE INDIAN OCEAN is, they would laugh at such cheap self awarded title!!!!
I managed to challenge them because I know my rights and have some IT knowledge, but what about others!!!
Hope that others having problem will not let go to MT and fight to the very end. :-)

Hello everybody, i need a little help.
Am throwing my sucking Nomad nxt month (contract la reussi fini) and i decided its high time to jump to MyT (ceki 750+vat la)
but i would like to knw what the average speed u get when u have trespass the 1Gb limit, coz me i think i’ll blow 1Gb in a day only.
Or is it worth i jump on Wannadoo 128 the same price, but guaranteed speed.
I live at Ollier, Quatres Bornes.
KiNG - 192.168.1.1 :-) says
Hi everybody. Its not wat u gonna fink on MyT. The 1GB limit is still on but zis time, it slows ur connection in order to get atleast 10kbps or less. As u can see, people who are new over here, i mean in new MyT users, u wont get this problem, but after 4 to 5 months, u will start to get bored with the connection. and due to this slow bitrate, problems will be observed in context of dowloading with the normal downloader of IE or firefox, this could be a real sticky problem, coz i fink most of us download files from rapidshare, where no dowload accelerators can be used. Have anybody ever tried to mod his/her livebox?
KiNG - 192.168.1.1 :-) says
Sorry. Forgot to add somefing. Hey do u everybody, get the full bitrate while using ur specific connection? i mean for example if u r using an option 1 [rs750] ? do u get around 128kb without distortion? while u r downloading a file in IE, with original downloader, can u dowload a file worth 100mb in 30 mins?
ViSh says
the connection depend on the ip u have.. ip it start bt 192 then surely ur connection will b slower compared to 44.. try to check that.. change ur ip’s if needed.. its for myt of 256kbps.. n yep the livebox can b tweak..
KiNG_01 says
Yo. Vish, this tweaking is being tracked down by My.T. Do you know that every move you make on the net, it is being logged on at My.T, it is due to security. But, i am not sure of something, can u tell me ur attenuation, and tech details as in my region, i think becoz of this i am not able to dowload large files, for me to download 100MB is about 3 or 5 hours. I changed from the connection of 1 MB to 256 due to financial prob. Anybody here, knows how to use the torrent on My.T by LAN?
ViSh says
loll… those fools… hahhahahahahahaha… they r a lill stupid those tech wrkin there.. i mean many of them.. not all.. all things cant b logged on their system.. look for me it takes 7-8hrs to dwnld 695MB.. i do hve 256kbs.. thats myt.. for torrent u should simply add the ports on the livebox and it depends also on the seed..

Big uup. Big up. As you can deduce from this blog many of us has been having an attenuation problem. Mine is 55.4 dB, with 11 dB for SNR. I am from about 2.5 KM from the center, just imagine how quick is this connection. The technicians told me that the cable which is providing ADSL in mauritius has a fixed diameter for atleast 2 years and depends on the ministry of technology . On top of that it is being overloaded coz most of us r leaving wanadoo, nomad for My.T. The most pain with My.T is that due to the distance of my region i am not able to get the option of My.T watch.

Hi friends. I’m having a really annoying problem with my Wanadoo 128 dsl connection, I don’t have Myt, by the way.. (I had requested for myt at first but received no reply for 2 MONTHS!!! had to drop the idea, and an insulting email altogether to MT!!!) Well, my problem is that I get frequent and completely random disconnects in my dsl service, ONLY when I’m downloading! My connection speed is good for a 128, I get around 13-15kb/s, but the thing gets disconnected after 3-5 mins… I can surf for hours without any problem.. It’s only when I’m downloading something that I get disconnected. Line stays in sync, i only get disconnected to the server. I’ve tried another Sagem 800 modem and Alcatel Speedtouch Pro modem too, but I get the same problem. Formatted my pc several times and tried fresh copies of WinDoZ, I’ve also used several linux distro’s (ubuntu, gentoo, fedora…) .. all in vain.. dunno what to do! called MT people several times since last month.. techs came and checked the line, which according to them is supposedly good… I’ve gone mad tryin all sorts of tricks found on the net! I just don’t know what to do, for I still have to pay around Rs800 monthly for this crap, just to surf and check mail!!!!! Please, HELPPPPPPPPPP!!!

Hi. Back in here. Yo, buddies, do u know how much time does My.T take to change the ip address and also for Wanadoo ADSL? Am trying to switch it to 41.xxx.xxx, yo all kno z heck My.T not functioning when needed. Sometimes i get the 41.xxx address, but gives only 23.xx kbps MAX?
Yo all gonna laugh, I know that it is possible to use z livebox under linux, but 4 fun i asked 8585, yo know what zey replied??? They told security breach level high under linux, livebox malfunctions, and give too much CRC errors? Zey forgot the eth.0, even telling me LAN wont work, firmware installation STRICTLY required??
Am using a linux, esp. Knoppix, Slackware, now am trying to install gentoo, but the problem is when using wget to download MY.T gives DOWNLOAD RATE = 9 kbps [sometimes varying from 9 to MAX=26.9] Imagine the speed of this box. Do u know how to tweak this model of livebox “SAGEM FAST 3202”? Tried re-writing the IC for net control, but ended up updating firmware. [in other words MODDING livebox is not recommended], i found that changing values make other ic take a special command, blocking everything. My luck was that LAN IC # was left unchanged.
I leave u wiz emerge –sync for your knowledge[hope u knw what is zis]? TRY HELPING ME, YO ALL ENTHUSIAST OF MY.T ? :p

Like Antish and many others, I’m having the same problem surfing or downloading. I can’t even download a 1MB file..it starts downloading but after a while it stops. For those having hypertension, I won’t recommend you calling 8585 because you will end up having a stroke..to be more specific, you’ll waste your time talking and arguing with them. They have instructions to say only “You have exceeded your 1GB of data or we don’t guarantee the data transfer rate for external websites”.
Is there a reason why these recent months MyT is pushing hard to get new subscribers? Some say..MT will be losing the monopoly on SAFE this coming April..and that there will be competitive rate between MT, MTML, etc. Could those who have news, share with us. Thanks.
I saw that with Wanadoo ADSl 128, there’s no data limit like with MyT. Could anyone having Wanadoo ADSL share some information here. What’s the transfer rate you get on down-stream and up-stream? Any problem when downloading or surfing? Thanks again.
Ramesh says
I don’t thinks that you will find a better internet connection than MYT,me I am using MYT and I am having 30 Kb/s maximum while download, and I am satisfy, I would like to let you know that MYT is using ADSL2 technologies,do you know:while you are watching VOD on your decoder, you are using an 8MB connection,I think that subscribers that are not in the range of 10 Kilometer between the nearest exchange will have connection problem, due to the ADSL2 technologies, MTML do not have the technologies to give you such internet connection, anyway MT have a big advance on him,if he is coming with a good package,I think then that MT will increase it.. For the moment we will have to use what we have.. .
BubbleGum says
To Pissoff with myt,
I’ve got to say that now , contrary to what every myT surfer I meet say these days, Wanadoo ADSL is much faster than let’s say 10-12 months back when this new crappy fad of subscribing to myT went live!
I can assure you that I receive 12-13 KB/s on Wanadoo 128K all day long.(Aren’t you surprised that since they launched this service in 2002, yeah that’s a very long stretch of time, they have not yet thought of retiring this sh*t offer? As they say 128K is the dial-up of all ADSL offers…). Perhaps MyT bandwidth is saturated as we speak, but nobody’s got any clear proof of that.
Easing the pain & frustration of its subscribers is definitely not something MT is good at. 2008 is a bright year for local telco companies? I don’t think so.
Krishna says
@ Ramesh. You’re wrong it doesn’t use an 8 MB connection the max download on my.t lines is 4 MB even when using V.O.D if you don’t believe me check in the livebox’s setut page under “configuration avancee –> statistiques adsl” the max download is capped at 4 MB.

Maybe you have reached your download limit. Many local school goers still download movies and Tv shows to the max and reach the 1GB limit in just a few days. Yet, they complain when they themselves did sign up for the offer knowing very well that MT maintains a stated download limit. You should find this on their website. Complain and they’ll always give the same answer. Sorry so many of us hungry for more bandwidth blindly jumped on the other side. Caveats always exist… Un prix à payer…

hi all..
please help
which is better ASDL 128 or My.T 256(BUT with a limit of 1GB)???

HELP ME OUT
Lycan says
@ Leena,
Ok. I’ve been a user of Myt for the past year and I might disconnect form Myt.Its just not for me.But Myt has both advantages and disadvantages.
First let me tell you what you will get with Myt connetion:
1.Myt surf:
For 750(vat excluded) per month, you will get 256KBps speed and 1Gb Data transfer Priority.
That’s good for anyone whose just a casual surfer, checking mails, surfing websites, and downloading light files not more than 1gb. For 256Kbps you will get 25-30 KBps download speed and surfing speed, BUT AFTER YOU CROSS UR 1gb, YOUR SPEED WILL DROP TO 7-9 kBps WHICH IS VERY SLOW FOR ANY KINDS OF DOWNLOADS.BUT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SURF BUT A REDUCED SPEED.
If your a heavy downloader, be careful before getting Myt.But if your going just to surf, then go for Myt.The 256KBps speed is pretty fast for surfing ,chatting , voice chatting and looking for information over the net.
With Myt you will get The livebox modem which has Wi-fi integrated in it, so you can connect ur Bluetooth cellphones, laptops to surf the net wirelessly in ur home.
Myt Watch:
With Myt watch you will get the TNT decoder on which you can see MBC TNT 12 channels and the Video On Demand service where you can rent movies and watch within 24 hrs.I find the VOD service bad for its collection of old movies, Me personally I find TNT Decoder very slow to operate and a waste of resources.
Myt Talk:
One Plus point is Myt talk, where you get discounted international calls, that’s good if you’re used to call abroad regularly without having to use international calling cards. But me personally I believe that with the net and softwares like skype, google talk and yahoo and msn messengers, you can have video or voice chat with anyone on the planet for free, just pay for the internet connection.
The questions before subscribing to Myt services should be:
1.Will 1 gb be enough for me per month? If you’re a heavy downloader of movies, softwares, torrents, mp3 clips, utube, internet radio, etccc, Myt is not for you.
2.And keep in mind that the minimum subscription contract with Myt is 1 Year.If sometime later you want to disconnect say after 6 month after using Myt, you will have to pay for the remaining 6 month left AS YOU SIGNED FOR A 1 YEAR MINIMUM SUBSCRIPTION CONTRACT.And be careful the subscription automatically gets renewed after the 12 months if you dont inform them that you want to disconnect.
3.If ever you call the customer care for slow speed, be prepared to hear “that you crossed your
1 gb data trasfer, or we dont guarantee international speeds….
In the end its have to make a choice.
Me now I might shift to Wanadoo Adsl 128Kbps,
I hope that I get constant speeds ,anyways there’s major complains from every isp providers in mauritius and nobody doing anything about it.The problem is competition, there are no real open competition due to the market size of mauritius ,That’s a fact, what can we do?Just select and use what’s there????heheheheheh

Hi everybody
Julien i dont your right about ip 41.XX…and 196.XX..ranges. Just to correct you, that both ip goes via SAFE optical fibre, infact all ip based services i.e internet,IPLC,dedicated link goes via SAFE. Its just that there are two gateway servers with two ip ranges. One for 256kbps and one for 512k/1mb. 256k users get 41.xx ip ranges and 512k/1mb users get 196.xx…I am telling all this just because of my past technical attachment at MT network dept!!
Hope everything clear now

well, i recently switched from adsl 128 to adsl 512 kbps..and i’m living a nightmare..
Till the first day, that that my adsl connections of adsl 128 kbps upgraded to 512 kpbps, the maximum download speed that i get on international servers is around 14-15 KB/s (i.e around 141 kbps). Its only on local servers that get the full speed of 512 kbps.
Don’t know what to do.
I phone orange and told them the problem and they told me that there was probably a fault on my line and that they would check it and then phone me. Till now, i am still waiting for that call.
Earlier, i was on adsl 128 kbps and i did not experience a single problem. The max speed that i got varied from 14-16 KB/s.
Orange service is too bad, when i told them that i got such maximum a speed with and adsl 128, thet told me that it was impossible.
And now, i would have to pay for that ridiculous speed of 14 KB/s for a connection of ADSl 512???
That is cheating..

i have myT 512 for a month or so, downloading from utorrent at max of 6kb/s. tried port forwarding after reading this blog but still remains at max 6kb/s. how to solve this? paying Rs1500 for 6kb/s download? you must be kidding.
Eddy Young says
@bess: DOWNLOADING torrents is not a good way to measure bandwidth, as there are too many factors (tracker load, number of peers, and availability of file pieces) that can affect the speed of downloads. A better way is to download a file that is big enough to require a transfer of several minutes, which would provide a more realistic average download speed.
Eddy.
ViSh23 says
the port setting is not ok.. thats why u r getting only 6kbs
ViSh23 says
just check ur connection at http://www.speedtest.net
Eddy Young says
@ViSh23: EVEN though the port setting could be incorrect, it is not certain that this is the cause. I have seen torrents that would not start downloading at a decent speed for the first 24 hours but would then hit maximum download speed. As I said, there are too many factors that can affect the speed at which a torrent downloads.
Eddy.

plz help on this port forwarding…i’m using 50462 (it came up as random so i used it and set it up on livebox IP setting too) How can I increase the download speed on utorrent?
bess says
i checked my connection and it gives something close to 512 but my problem is with utorrent… how can i set up a port that gives me faster download???
shaad says
You dont need to enable port forwarding or any other..livebox by default has Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) enable so that I automatically recognised bittorrent clients, messenger etc..
Well if y’re having slow connection with torrents makes sure you have got plenty seeds for the file you downloading and configure your DL/UL limits wel :-)
ViSh says
Eddy Young^ agreed with what u have said, seeds and many other things are responsible for good speed…
bess it really depends u must choose at first torrent with maximum seeds, but at times even with maximum torrent u cant expect maximum bandwidth and btw MT also do play a big part in our download
Eddy Young says
bess– Leave the torrent to download for at least 24 hours (mind your carbon footprint) and see if the transfer speeds up as more seeds become available.
Some trackers enforce a policy whereby seeders are given priority over leechers. Try seeding a file on the same tracker(s) and see if things improve.
Feel free to send the
.torrent
file (if it is legitimate) for me to test. You can find my e-mail address on my web site.Eddy.
bess says
yeah i choose the one with most seeds, and dl/ul limits also configured. i think it’s with MT.. but how do you guys find ur downloads on utorrent? if u’re getting higher speeds then there should be *something* that is different on mine here! mine is constantly on 5-6kb/s (not getting to any peak after x hrs etc)
Eddy Young says
bess– As said before, other factors, on top of number of seeds, can affect the download speed. Have you tried leaving the torrent download to run for some time? Or, are you just torrent-hopping?
Eddy.
shaad says
Guys Guys I have been reading all these posts since long…dont blame MT from everything!!! Just to tell you that I get torrent speed up to 70kbit/s when the are plenty of seeds…

reaction…
Solution says
@Yann: I got a nomad just like you, The only difference is that you own it, and me not. Well i use to lend it from someone. One day i got a problem a bit like you(Ive just read on the newsletter that they were implementing a sort of login first to access their network) And eventually i couldn’t use internet on that day only cause i did not know the login) And one week after i was back on the internet as usual with the nomad!!
They have put this login in case someone steal your nomad they won’t be able to use it(I think this applies only for newest members).
Well, i think there should be a way to bypass it.
For example try using ADSL Autoconnect (its not sure that it’ll work, ive only read an article on it, but no tried it yet). Or else don’t switch on your nomad when you’re windows had already booted. Switch just before the windows boot screen start to load.
Solution says
And by the way, i think i don’t have that problem because my default gateway isn’t good; i can’t connect to nomadlive.com
i get many problems to sign in windowsLive. It tells me there’s a problem with the default gateway. Anyway, i can still use the net freely.

We know that you enjoy surfing and downloading music, movies and pictures. But we also know that this can get a little frustrating at times, as heavy users on our network can reduce the internet speed at your end.
Heavy users download very large files 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, leaving less bandwidth for the rest of you. And we think it’s unfair that you should not be getting good speeds when you surf the internet because of a very small number of users. To make sure everyone is getting the best quality connection speeds from us, we have set up monitoring tools to identify those few very heavy users and to manage their bandwidth.
That’s why we have introduced the Fair Usage Policy. We know the majority of customers usage will always fall well within this policy, but this will also help us address any excessive usage, so you always get the most reliable broadband services.
How would you qualify as a heavy user? Well, if you continuously download large files, then there is a great chance that you are a heavy user. For example, if you are an ADSL 512K customer and you download over 4,000 music tracks per month or more than 28 movies per month and keep on doing this type of download every month, then you would qualify as a heavy user. This type of download is a large amount by any normal standard of usage.
Cheers

So he has 60GB in excess! :D

So what’s the real limits for 128k??? :P
As for the 20GB, then Orange’s latest mail is misleading… ;)

shaad says
Orange’s way of showing Indicative thresholds for ADSL Home may be wrong!!
Well let me explain…
Why cant they tell us that the limit of a 128k is infact xxGB and for 512k is xxGB etc etc…rather that posting an indicative threshold, why?? :-)
I personally dont count the no. of mp3s i have downloaded, nor the no. of web pages browsed by the end of each month…AND and even after this “warning” ma cousin is still downloading @ full speed!!!!

Hi everyone. I just take a package of myT 256Kbps and the Orange guys have installed it on 1PC(using cable) and a laptop(using the WiFi) only. I wanna install it on 2 more PCs. What additional hardware should i have? And can anyone help me to configure my other 2 PCs?
selven says
Aneesha, you just need a wireless network card for each of the 2 PCs. That’s all.
Configuration is easy, just plug in the card, install the drivers, and its done.
avinash says
I guess you have one Livebox.
If the two PCs are close to the Livebox (or you don’t mind running cables in your house), then you only need a cheap Ethernet hub or switch:
[Livebox] — Ethernet — [Switch] — Ethernet — [PC1, PC2 and PC3]
In case you don’t want to use an Ethernet cable between the Livebox and the Switch, then you need a Wireless bridge. Personally, I use a Linksys WRT54GL with a Thibor firmware. Alternatively, something like the Linksys WET54G is also a good choice.
When you do this, you get:
[Livebox] — Wireless — [Bridge] — Ethernet — [PC1, PC2 and PC3]
As for the config of the PC, just use a DHCP server (either on the Livebox or on the bridge) and everything should be ok.
Have fun!
Shaad says
@avinash
DD-WRT is not a bad choice either..I have flash my WRT54GL and 3xWHR-HP-54 with it to get full potential of these linux router!!!
selven says
hmm avinash didn’t you made it just a bit more expensive and a bit more complicated when just 2 wnic would have sufficed?
avinash says
You’re right.
The easiest route (and maybe cheapest — I don’t know the exact prices) is to have a wireless card (or dongle) on each PC. Personally, I don’t do that because, as you know, I use Linux and I prefer having an Ethernet connection…
Aneesha says
Thanks Selven and Avinash for the information. I bought a Switch. It works perfectly n had use Avinash method.
[Livebox] — Ethernet — [Switch] — Ethernet — [PC1, PC2 and PC3]
Well the myT officers tell me that the package is no longer restricted to 1GB policy. Meaning that i can surf on the net at high speed n hav unlimited downloads.
But the thing WiFi, if someone(any stranger) got a laptop having wifi enabled. Can he find my LiveBox n connect to the internet without my permission??
Btw the downloading rate of myT 256k, is how much?? mine is abt 30KBps but that of my friends are 40-50 and sometime they said that it goes up to 60KBps. Can anything be done to boost my downloading rate?? Help plz….
selven says
aneesha, use your browser to go to http://192.168.1.1/
then click on “Controle d’acces”, down you’ll see “Paramétrage du réseau sans fil “, and all the way down you’ll see “SecuritE”, you can choose the type of security you want, wep or wpa, then a button will appear asking you to configure it, once there, its pretty self explanatory. [wpa is said to be more secure than wep], but both have its disadvantages, if you are not parano, use wep, its okay for most people.
Aneesha says
Okie thanks Selven…
But the downloading rate of myT 256k, is how much?? mine is abt 30KBps but that of my friends are 40-50 and sometime they said that it goes up to 60KBps.
Can anything be done to boost my downloading rate??
avinash says
Hi Aneesha,
You’re limited to 256Kbit/s (which roughly equates to 26-27 Kb/s) on your MyT 256 ADSL connection when downloading from international websites.
It’s only when you download from a website in Mauritius that you can exceed this bandwidth. For instance, you can do 64Kb/s from http://pages.intnet.mu/
Aneesha says
Hmm…so my connection is ok. Nice :-)
selven says
yes, but avinash, have you noted a severe peak when downloading Mac related stuffs??
For example, I use to get around 224KB/s [yes KB and not kb] when i am downloading mac updates, [ i was kind of shocked watching 100MB of stuffs being downloaded that fast!
Also, i have that widget on my mac which allows me to know about the latest movies, [which gives a nice summary of the movies and… crystal clear trailers… trailers which loads at a speed which i thought people at MT went crazy [around 200KB], tried downloading something from rapidshare immediately, didn’t get that speed, so i suppose there must be a mirror somewhere here, on the next update i’ll probably check the results in more details.
avinash says
I’ve not noticed this.
But last week, for about one hour (I don’t remember exactly when…), bandwidth increased a lot (to around 200Kb/s) while I was looking for some HD trailers and I was delightfully surprised. Maybe you were downloading updates at the same time…
Shah says
Yes, there seems to be a mirror or there is some bandwidth policy when it comes to updates and some files. The increase in speed is also applicable to some of MS updates, and to NVidia drivers, as well. It’s very cool.
avinash says
Or maybe simply a caching proxy working really well somewhere in Port-Louis?
:-)
selven says
probably :p that’s a more than welcome improvement
carrotmadman6 says
So it wasn’t “luck” that made my 186MB Vista Updates finish in 1.5 hours… :P

WOW…200KB/s??? selven ur connection has gone mad!!! ProfiT servi et download o maximum.
gurudas says
hello avinash i want 2 know if my 256 kbps is slower if i have 2 cables connected from one livebox to 2 other pcs
Who? says
Hello pple.
Quite interesting what is going on here. I use Myt 256 (been a while now) I just had a laptop to configure running vista. Updating the vista ( >200MB ) and was getting a top speed of 1.7Mbps with an average of 1.5Mbps. To be honest i was quite impress. But it don’t end here. I had to download some drivers from HP to. and got around the same speed. And from Intel (…the chip manufacturer.not processed potato chips.lol!) was getting good speed too. With a little add-on on firefox i found out that intel.com (196.27.66.8) was hosted in Mauritius. A little more web surfing later i was on the alienware web site based in the US (206.191.129.170) , very nice looking with rich contents btw. and was getting this 1.7Mbps speed. with the videos loading blazingly fast. All happy i was. BUT strangely when i went downloading something on myt.mu (based in Mauritius) I was getting a top speed of ‘only’ 1.4Mbps average 1.2Mbps. Thats not nice MT..
So i think that maybe MT is hosting/caching some of the major brand’s website. Like Microsoft, Intel, Dell, HP, Apple…umm! but why the alienware website??Bizarre
Oh and for the others [facebook, youtube, msn, live.com.etc, etc] the speed it no better that 240kbps yep 240…
:)
avinash says
196.27.66.8 is not intel.com. Rather it is:

So it seems that Akamai has deployed some servers in Mauritius for us to experience that kind of bandwidth… Or MT has been extremely generous with us for the past few days :-)
Any insider info?
Eddy Young says
AFRINIC is responsible for allocating IP addresses to African ISPs amongst other things.
WHOIS is just telling you that this IP address is under AFRINIC’s responsibility.

Umm… Well i didnt know that Afrinic was also hosting the sites in Mauritius. I thought they only have offices at the Ebene. as it been hyped and everyone wanted their asses in the ‘Intelligent Building’ [be it doing nothing]..and is it only now that we getting the advantages??
well, they chose Mauritius cause 1.we very literate 2.Internet is cheep ;) ;) 3.good speed so that can be distributed all over the African continent . did u know they ditch S.A for us. :)
Now that we getting the benefit of the deal we only need to know how many other web services they hosting in here. :)
PS: BTW the add-on of firefox is flagfox. it just show you a little flag in lower right corner of firefox. Hover it u see the ip of the page, click it and u get the geo-positioning of the host.. try it on intel.com ;)

i already have a desktop pc connected to the livebox via cable.
sometimes i use my laptop ouside my house to connect to the internet wirelessly and i get my signal strength on low or very low. when i get inside my house and come close to the livebox i get excellent… i then found myself browsing the net inside my house when i wanted to be outside doing it and breathing some fresh air :-)

HI,the maximum speed depends on which site you are downloading from like msn.com gives full speed of your connection to download messenger!MY connection is 200k Speed when downloading(from full connection sites)IT is from 200Kb/s to 234 kb/s.Apple.com also offers full speed

Easy.
Get an account on DynDNS. Configure your Livebox (Config avancée > Réseau > DynDNS.) Add a LAN server (Config basic > Serveur LAN.) For example, for a web server, use port 80.

avinash says
I really cannot help you about a possible decrease in bittorrent traffic bandwidth because I only very rarely download things using bittorrent using my MyT connection. What I can tell you though is that The Pirate Bay is working well now (at 22:30) at my place.

Hello you guys have lots of knowledge on troubleshooting computers, i would be glad if you could help me with this one…
i would like to know how to extend the wifi range for myt’s livebox and the equipment requirement and how to set it up.
Do you think you could help?
avinash says
One possibility is to get a Wifi range extender (e.g. the Linksys WRE54G) but it seems that they are tough to setup. The other possibility (and this is what I would do personally if I had the same problem as you) is to get the ever so dependable Linksys WRT54G (or, better, a WRT54GL) and use the wireless distribution system (WDS) mode.
sleepoholic says
@ Ludo
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/468003/boost_your_wifi_reception/
check this link…….:p
selven says
@ ludo, my temp fix for extending my wireless range form 30 metres to 60 metres is easy :p. I costs less i think.
I had a netgear router, i had thrown away my livebox, but then my lil bro wanted the net, what i did, i placed the livebox in between 30 metres from my bro’s room (or less if you wished) and 30 metres from my netgear router e.g
[bro comp]——30M—–(livebox)—-30M—-(netgear)–[My comps]
(note you don’t need to be strict about 30meters, this is just an example).
then i assumed since the livebox itself is a computer, i can connect it to the netgear’s network, then i can make my bro’s comp connect to the livebox.. which is already in the netgears network.
then i could either install a proxy on my comp or on the netgear, i installed it on my comp [which had a wireless card which was not used [since i prefer wired connection]. I allowed my bro’s comp on the proxy, and he has access to the net even if he is far away from the netgear which is connected to the computer.
:p i have changed system nowadays, i have cabled my house everywhere to provide rj45 sockets :D [we have a porn server and we need fast access :p for sharing].
Shaad says
hi ludo,
Avinash is right about extending your wifi network using wds on the wrt54gl or any other router but unfortunately livebox does not support wds mode!!

hi can somebody help me with setting up static ip address for my NICs it changes constantly and cause conflicts with other pcs. 1 pc connected via cable and the other 2 with wifi. i use myt.
All the pcs run windows xp.
i know some stuff about networks…not a noob though but im sure all the pros will give me the BEST advice for troubleshooting this issue.
Thank you in advance.
avinash says
Just use static IPs everywhere.
I suppose you use Windows. Go in the configuration panel, choose network, find your NIC, choose TCP/IP properties, assign a static address (I would advise 192.168.1.101 up to 192.168.1.103 for the three computers), use a netmask of 255.255.255.0, gateway of 192.168.1.1, DNS server of 192.168.1.1 and everything should work correctly.
[Incidentally, the Livebox has a good DHCP server. If you are getting conflicts, this means that the DHCP server is giving an address which is clashing with one fixed address somewhere. Either check your DHCP server configuration (go to http://192.168.1.1) or make sure each and every PC gets its address from the DHCP server i.e. use only dynamic addresses. In essence, either be 100% static or 100% dynamic if you are a beginner.]
JT says
Ok everything works fine! Thanx a lot!
What i did was assign them addresses from .101 to .103, leaved netmask default ,
changed gateway and DNS Server like told.
Now im curious why 192.168.1.101 and not… say 192.168.1.10 ? :)
avinash says
You could have use any unused IP address but I know that, by default, the DHCP server on the Livebox starts assigning addresses as from 192.168.1.10 so my choice was only to prevent clashes from happening.
JT says
hey avinash everything ok… no clashes!
Now i’m wondering whether it would be possible to share my home printer
(HP Deskjet 5150) with the three Computers?? could the Livebox have this function?
What do you think?
avinash says
I don’t think the Livebox can do this. What you need to do instead is to connect the printer to one of the PCs and share it from there.
DarkmindeD says
hmmm, mo p servi myT 256 and mo gagne 32kb pou download…. I heard that if u use another username and password on 192.168.1.1 for example u use someone’s username who’z connection is 512kbps u will get the same download speed as he gets, so ur myt 256 will become 512… Wow… can someone confirm this…
JT says
hey guys… strangely im having problems confuring the Livebox on firefox when being connected via cable to my pc…when i open 192.168.1.1 type my username and password i get syntax error bad request… and part of the livebox gui (the top menu only ) and pages loads continously and never shows up unless i use internet explorer…beurk!! :)
And this doesnt happen at all when i loggin on firefox again to 192.168.1.1 from my laptop when being on wireless ….. i changed my cables at first i suspected it be the fault, re-installed my network adapter ( Via Rhine II Fast adapter) and still no good results.

hi ludo,
Avinash is right about extending your wifi network using wds on the wrt54gl or any other router but unfortunately livebox does not support wds mode!!
_____________/________________
So that means we cannot use a wireless repeater/ wifi range extender with the Livebox????
selven says
@ ludo:
you could also just use the livebox like i mentionned…
my another simpler setting
here’s how it is
http://thegodof.net/images/mysetup.jpg
get a machine that is able to get online via your main router to connect to your livebox. (call this machine A)
and place the livebox in between that machineA and the machineB that doesn’t have any connection….
install squid on machineA .. since the wireless interface of machineA is connected to your livebox and its ethernet interface connected to your real router… it means machineA is on both network since it has squid install… you can just proxy through it :):):)
this is very simple to do. less than 5 minutes of setup.
Ludo says
@Selven
Your setup is not bad though…In fact i moved my box using the RSSI from inssider to get a stable position where there is enough signal coverage for the wireless pcs and it is ok now :-)
Ps:i would really like to see some pics of your server room and equipment if it’s possible :-)

Speedy says
There are four major attributes of your broadband connection that affect it’s speed/stability. When a user posts in the forums we ask you to provide stats so we can see those attributes and try to determine probably cause of whatever the issue is that you are having.
Here is the Squawk guide to those attributes In no particular order, they are
1. Sync speed (down and up)
2. Attenuation (down and up)
3. SNR (down and up)
4. Errors (many different kinds)
Sync Speed
This is the theoretical maximum speed that data can be transferred along your connection, both up and down. It is the data rate that your router and the exchange try to communicate at. Your router may also call it bandwidth.
Attenuation
Attenuation can be thought of as resistance on your line. The more resistance, the harder the broadband signal has to push to get through. Think of trying to push a box along the floor and then imagine that you slowly start to fill up the box with concrete. As the box fills so the speed at which you can push it slows down, until there comes a point where you can no longer move the box at all. Line length to your home could be thought of as the concrete in the box, the longer the line, the more concrete, or resistance, the signal has to push through. Attenuation between your exchange and the test socket in your house is almost entirely determined by cable length and cable type. Ideally your attenuation is as low as possible.
SNR
Signal to noise ratio, also known as noise margin. This is simply a ratio of good signal to noise on your line.
Think of it like speaking to someone in a quiet room. In a quite room there is no noise so when you speak at normal volume the percentage of sound in the room is almost 100% your voice, no noise. You are easy to understand. Now imagine that there are another couple of people in the room talking at the same time. You carry on talking at normal volume, but so do they. You conversation is still perfectly understandable, but the percentages have changed. From the point of view of the person you are speaking to probably only 80% of what they hear is you, the other 20% is noise. That would be a ratio of 4:1, or an SNR of 4. If you had that same conversation but there were hundreds of people in the room there would be so much noise that you wouldn’t be understandable at all.
The same theory applies with broadband. In broadband terms the two people are your router and the exchange, the good sound is the signal between them, and noise is any kind of interference. Noise on the line can be caused by a vast number of of things. Think what happens to your MW radio signal when you pass under power lines.
For a list (updating all the time) of factors that are known to have affected other forum members, have a look here
As you now understand, the higher your SNR the cleaner your signal, the better your router and exchange can talk to each other. When the admins change your profile think of it as almost like changing the volume the router is speaking at. As it gets louder it has to speak slower, quieter and it can speak faster. But as it gets quiter/faster it becomes more prone to noise. Hence, you sacrifice speed for stability. High SNR is desirable
Errors
Errors are many and varied, google the various different types if you want an explanation. They can affect your connection in many ways and often point to various issues but there is no real pattern. Errors need to be monitored over an extended period and linked to variations in the other variables before we might be able to isolate a problem
Why you need to test in the test socket
There are effectively two networks involved when you connect. The first network is between the exchange and your test socket (or master socket if you do not have a test socket). The second is between your test socket and the rest of your house.
Talktalk (or any ISP) can only influence your connection up to the point where it reaches your test socket. Up to that point the cables connecting you to the exchange are not your responsibility and if a fault is found it is up to BT Openreach to fix it.
By testing in the test socket the problem can be isolated to either
1. Faulty router
2. Faulty filters/cables
3. Fault in the network between your test socket and the exchange, or at the exchange itself
If you do not test in the test socket all sorts of other variables come into the equation. In my own house if I test in one particular phone socket instead of another I see a decrease in sync speed of over 3000. And just yesterday I tested a micro-filter that we have had connected to our phone for years and found that it reduced my sync speed by over 2/3.
Bearing that in mind, if all the various tests are carried out and it is determined that you need an engineer visit, but that engineer subsequently finds a problem in your internal wiring rather than your external wiring, you will be charged for that engineer visit. If you looked at the link earlier in this post you will have seen just how strange some of aspects that affect your connection can be, so you really do need to eliminate them.
Testing in the test socket is for your own benefit. What can be done when a problem is found There are far too many variables to go into detail here, but for a majority of people changes of profile are often enough to sort out a connection.
The various profiles that talktalk can put your connection on support various different line characteristics. Usually it is a case of finding the right tradeoff between speed and stability. You want as much speed as possible without sacrificing stability.

for JT his attenuation is good and i suppose u dont have any frequent disconections koz u r quite near to the exchange.

Thanks for that lengthy explanation ;-)

MYT will never give you the bandtwith per your contract. It will reap your money and provide snail internet connection. If you dont believe just subscribe to myt and make a speed test. You will get 1 tenth of the speed tou have paid..
I made the experience since the past 10 months. I am a network administrator and know nearly all steps to check internet speed.
Dont believe me. ok. trust them and get results after spending lots of money
Despite my several requests, they told me ” take it or leave it”
avinash says
I generally get much more than 1/10th of what I’m paying for. In fact, I am satisfied with my bandwidth (for now at least.) And, please, let us not forget that the bandwidth is provided under a “best-effort” policy…
Antish says
what are are you getting avinash mine is ok its around 1010kbps .tested with speedtest!!
Antish says
hey am sorry i mean what speed are you getting………
JT says
Overall i can’t complain with the service because its the only one that give me satisfaction…my internet runs ok with smaller problems arising at times…but its TRUE that the fact that we are paying for something (for me 512kbits/sec) and not receiving the full speed (for me would be 486kbits/sec) is still a problem left unsolved from MyT despite the best-effort policy compared to other ISPS.
Like i said my internet runs fine and being a former MTML subscriber…i dont know how many times i had to rang this company to solve internet slowness and problem failures with their modem and the only answer from their remote support technicians was to switch off and on the telephone they gave us to connect to the internet.WTF??
No less to say that i had a fun time acting like a idiot doing it after each internet session until i decided to switch to MyT…and not nomad after having heard many complaints of slowness of the internet service for this company.
I wish we had other companies that would provide better internet services because ALL the current ones that we have in mauritius are not worth paying for.

I can’t believe my download speeds have plummeted incredibly from 50 KB/s over the past few days to an erratic10-20KB/s on my ADSL line.
Frankly, that’s a huge disservice from Orange MT, esp after all the hype of March 1!
Thank you MT.

Hi Antish,
In general, I get nearly 100% of my theoretical bandwidth except from a few slow websites. As I wrote before, I can’t really complain.

Does any one know how to reduce attenuation ?
Do i have to buy an RJ-11 cable?

I don’t know how to reduce attenuation. Ask the MT people. They might know better.

Hi, i have recently subscribe to adsl home 512k. i got a lot of problem with it. they were giving me adsl 256k. i would like to know how to do speed test to know if they have changed my connection.
avinash says
Try to download something big and see if you get more than 25 kilobytes per second. If this is the case, then you have more than a 256kbit/s connection (i.e. 512 kbit/s at least :-)

i download with approx 40 kbps with download accelerator premium.
but my cousin has myt 512 he download with 60 kbs without download accelerator.
is this normal????
avinash says
Maybe.
512kbit/s is the MAXIMUM you can have IN THEORY. In practice, the actual speed depends on a lot of factors (e.g. distance from exchange) and this is why you have less than your cousin.

ITS great to hear that thieves are making them invest else they would have made BILLIONS of profit per YEAR
the service is hardly improving.
ITS time to move on fiber not cut the connection
A multinational should invest and compete with Orange as the latter monopolies the market

To be fair, the situation is not that bad in Mauritius compared to some other African countries I’ve been. But, a few months ago, I was in the US and I was amazed by the bandwidth people get there. For example, in Washington DC, I used a 20Mbit/s connection and it was pure joy.
I guess that’s one of the bad things that happen when one lives on a paradise island in the middle of nowhere :-)

Hi Avinash,
i posted a few comments in the past on some of your articles. I came across this one as you mentioned DYNDNS.com are you familiar with them ? I’m currently testing their service. I would like to be able to access a small NAS server from anywhere. I used ipchicken.com to get my ip address and have a friend ping it from somewhere else and he faced a time out. Do you know if its possible to get a public IP address, or have traffic routed to you on that orange IP we get when going online with an ADSL modem/router ? Do they have a certain port open for this purpose ?
I will also need to use port forwarding in the modem/router to be able to access the NAS .
catch up soon,
bye bye,
Dietmar

Hi Dietmar,
You’re mostly there. The idea is to (1) set up a DynDNS account, (2) make sure your ADSL modem/router can update DynDNS when it is given another IP address (the Livebox does), (3) set up port forwarding to your NAS (which should ideally have a static IP) and everything should be fine. I do that routinely to access my NAS from work through SSH.
[BTW, pinging sometimes fail because the various devices might be dropping ICMP packets.]

hi y all, well glad to see im not the only one seeing all these bad side effects of myt, on everybody who fell in the trap of moving from the 128 kbps to myt 512 kbps well the thing is myt or aka mauritius telecom is currently shaking because more and more people here in mauritius have realised wot they are doing on an everyday basis to all business to everybody without distinction, the truth is that they own mauritius, Because no one in mauritius has the courage nor the finance to attack them legally. or maybe because there is no democracy in mauritius at all and mauritian people are not free at all to chose wot they want. We are being in fact forced to pay if we want more speed :)
while they infact every day provide streaming videos all over the island. its really funny when you look at it 10 years ago there were video clubs all over the island and people who could afford to pay for rental would go out and rent himself a video it was i think at first 5 rupees or something more. but you have to ask yourself who benefited from all the closures and all police subsequent arrassement to those video clubs at that time up till now. There are some which are still open (those who survived who are all licenced by the masa ) so today i heard that mauritius telecom has launched music streaming on 3g phones. My question is where and how do they get the videos and musics from it doesnt miraculously end up on there server just like that they have to download it from the outside somehow at one point, do they have a permit for it if so where is it visible on there website or contract that everybody signs upon subscription all that to explain why mauritius telecom aka myt will always trottling each individuals connection when you try to let say watch a tv series directly on an international website so that you dont have any option either to use there services or find satisfaction else where but on the internet here in mauritius they control see everything that your are doing. but the biggest question is who is controlling them, if there were some kind of commission from the gov that was currently active. i would really like to know instead of spending millions for roads we already have i think the governement should help mauritius telecom financially too. because it is clear to me that the gov doesnt have need for an internet connection and that they obviously dont have any problem surfing on the internet these days because mauritius telecom takes care of them 24/7. Anyway thats on the topic where the gov decided that the price of the internet were to high for such a wonderful service that why in answer to that the mauritius telecom decided to cut everybodies connection in half and force them to upgrade there connection with a letter that im sure every body got. So when will all this end because it will have to end sooner or later.

this is wot we should all do in mauritius because frankly the daily usage of internet is becoming more and more worst each day that comes.

after all mauritius telecom should be aware that its users can also fight back using the same laws we are all under here in mauriitus.
hopes this makes a couple of people here smile.
